How to get a job after you graduate
The job market is evolving faster than ever.
It’s a good idea to read about as many sectors as you can to keep up with what’s out there. There may be a role out there that’s perfect for you that you haven’t even heard of yet.
Job sectors
The Prospects website is a good place to learn about different job sectors. You can also research career opportunities via targetjobs.
Graduate schemes
Graduate schemes are a great way to get started at a large organisation.
Recruitment begins up to a year in advance, with rigorous application processes and multiple interview stages. You’ll need to do plenty of research before you send off your application, which the Careers service can help you with.
See the graduate recruitment timeline to get an overview of typical timescales.
Graduate jobs
This refers to any job where the employer is willing to hire graduates. Graduate jobs tend to be advertised all year round and often mean you’re working directly alongside and learning from senior staff.
Read our how to find a job page for more information.
Self-employment and freelancing
Running your own business is an increasingly popular option for graduates. Spark, our business advice service is available to all students whilst at Leeds, and for five years after graduation.
Come to us with your business idea and we can offer expert advice, support, and preliminary funding.
Internships and work experience
Work experience is a great opportunity to build experience and relationships with employers – and can lead to a full-time graduate job if you make a good impression.
Formal undergraduate internship programmes tend to begin in September or early summer, with applications opening in the spring or previous autumn. Graduate internships or placements can begin anytime.
We also have a dedicated internship scheme with roles exclusive to University of Leeds students.
Volunteering
Volunteering can be a great way to gain skills, experience and industry contacts, particularly if you’re hoping to work in the charity sector.
