Careers support for students from underrepresented backgrounds

Progression towards career goals or further study

Employability and Progression Assistants offer one-to-one careers and employability support to students on the Plus Programme.

Employability and Progression Assistants are recent University of Leeds graduates from underrepresented backgrounds so they know first-hand how overwhelming career planning can feel.

Support available

Employability and Progression Assistants can help you with:

  • Getting started with career planning or looking for jobs in a specific industry.
  • Understanding how the Careers Service can guide and advise you, whatever year of study you are in.
  • Learning more about the range of professional skills webinars and in-person workshops taking place throughout the academic year.
  • Exploring MyCareer, accessing careers resources, and LinkedIn Learning.
  • CV, cover letter and application support.
  • Signposting you to specialist information and advice such as booking an appointment with a careers advisor.
  • Exploring our mentoring schemes and how you could benefit from a mentor.
  • Information about other opportunities such as study aboard, internships, exclusive Leeds placements, insight days or volunteering.

This support is available while you are a student and after you graduate.

Postgraduate study

For any students considering applying for a Masters programme, please take a look at the Leeds Masters Scholarship which offers funding towards a Postgraduate Taught programme at Leeds.

Eligible UK fee paying Masters students from under-represented backgrounds may also be able to access the Plus Programme as a postgraduate student. Students will be automatically enrolled via some entry routes, however if you think you may be eligible to join the Plus Programme you can self-refer by completing a form.

If you are a current Masters student on the Plus Programme, visit the Plus Programme SharePoint to see what’s available.

Current and prospective postgraduate researchers from underrepresented or minoritised backgrounds can access additional support from the PGR Diversity Team.

I want to say a massive thank you for all your help! Helping me to completely redesign/restructure my CV to a skills-based one was great, and being able to discuss options, get interview help, and grow my confidence has been amazing!
