Resits
If you fail a module, you may be able to retake it. Find out about different types of resits, whether you are eligible, when you can take resits and how to apply.
Here is some important information about resits, which you can read about in more detail on this page:
- You get two attempts to pass a module, the first attempt and one resit.
- If you think there are mitigating circumstances, you may be able to do a first attempt resit. The marks for first-attempt resits do not have a cap.
- Sometimes you may need to resit an assessment as an external candidate or carry a module into the following academic year.
- The University of Leeds does not charge resit fees. We made this change to our resit fee policy in January 2024.
Eligibility to resit
All students who are eligible to resit should do so at the next opportunity. If you do not, you may lose an attempt. For most students, this is during August, after they get their results. See the ‘Re-assessment dates and when to apply’ section for 2025 resit dates. If there is an ‘S’ next to your grade when you get your results, it means the format of the module is unsuitable for August re-assessment.
If you do not take a module, you will get an ‘absent’ classification for it. You are not usually able to resit incomplete modules.
If you are not sure whether you are eligible to resit, please contact your School.
Types of resits
First attempt resits
First attempt resits are usually given when you have mitigating circumstances.
This type of resit gives you a further opportunity to achieve a true mark. There is no cap on the pass mark for a first attempt resit.
If you accept the opportunity to do a first attempt resit, your resit mark will replace the original mark, even if it is lower than your original mark.
To get help and support with the mitigating circumstances process, please contact your school.
Second attempt resits
For this type of resit there is a cap on the mark you can get. The cap is the same as the pass mark.
For undergraduates this means resit marks have a cap of 40. For postgraduates the cap is 50.
Carrying module resits into the next academic year
If you are not in your final year and have a remaining resit attempt, you may be able to retake modules in the next academic session.
You would resit while studying your new modules. This is a carried module resit.
These could be first or second attempt resits for undergraduate or postgraduate students.
In some circumstances you may need to defer a year and resit your modules as an external candidate, for example because your workload would be too high when combined with a full year of study.
Whether you can progress will depend on whether the modules you are resitting are Pass For Progression (PFP) modules. This means you need to pass them before you can progress.
For guidance on whether you are eligible to resit, please contact your school.
External candidate resits
If you are in your final year and have a remaining resit attempt, you may be able to resit as an external candidate the following academic year.
These could be first or second attempt resits for undergraduate or postgraduate students.
Candidates only need to attend University to resit on-campus examinations and assessments.
As an external student your status and access to facilities may change. You can find information about what to expect in the External Student Guidance (PDF).
How to apply
First attempt resits
You do not need to apply. If your school grants you a first attempt resit, you will need to confirm if you wish to take it. If you are unsure who to contact, you can find details on the school contacts page.
Second attempt resits - published marks
For a second attempt resit, you need to submit an application online for any module with an assessment you want to resit. You should apply via the results and resit application page on Minerva:
- sign into Minerva
- select the module(s) you wish to resit
- click submit.
Second attempt resits - provisional marks
If you are a postgraduate student and your results are provisional you should apply to resit online. You should apply for all modules you want to resit, including coursework only modules via the provisional marks page on Minerva:
- sign into Minerva
- navigate to the provisional marks page
- select the resit application form
- complete all sections of the form
- click submit at the end of the form
- print off a PDF copy of your submission for your records.
Exceptional attempt resits
If you have an exceptional resit attempt due to mitigation, such as a third attempt, you will not be able to apply online. You should contact your school to confirm you wish to resit.
Re-assessment dates and when to apply
You will be able to apply online after you get your results, to take a resit during the August reassessment period. You should make sure you are available for all dates during the assessment period. This is because it is not possible to find out the exact date of a specific assessment before you apply to resit.
The August re-assessment period will take place 12 to 22 August 2025.
Lifelong Learning Centre (LLLC) foundation students may be able to resit during a July reassessment period. To check your eligibility, email the Lifelong Learning Centre: lifelonglearning@leeds.ac.uk.
The timeline for these resits is:
- provisional results release: 9 June 2025
- deadline to apply for a resit: 7 July 2025
- resit timetable publication: 9 July 2025
- reassessment resit period: 14 to 18 July 2025.
Assessed-work deadlines
To find out the deadlines for submitting assessed work, contact your school.
If you miss the resit application deadline
After the application deadline, if you still wish to resit, you must contact your parent school. This is called a late resit application. Late resit applications are only possible if your module resit is available in August.
Resit timetables
If your application to resit was before the deadline, you will be able to check your timetable through Minerva. You can also view the reassessment timetable by module.
Your personal timetable is not available via the UniLeeds app.
You must check the appropriate assessments are on your timetable. If you discover any assessments are missing or not as expected, contact your school immediately. You should also email the Assessment and Progress Team: examinations@leeds.ac.uk.
Remember to tell them:
- your full name
- student ID number
- assessment details.
Cancelling a resit application
You may only cancel up until the start of the resit assessment period. After this, you will need to take the resit and you will lose an attempt if you do not take the it.
Contact your school and email the Assessment and Progress team: examinations@leeds.ac.uk.
Remember to tell them:
- your full name
- student ID number
- the module codes of the resits you wish to cancel.
Resit fees
The University of Leeds no longer charges resit fees. We made this change to our resit fee policy in January 2024.
The Student Information Service can help you with queries about resit fees. You can speak to someone face-to-face at the information points on campus.
Fees before 2023/2024
You still need to pay any resit fees you have due from before January 2024. If you have any outstanding resit fees to pay you should do so as soon as possible. Please see how to pay.
January 2024 resit fee refunds
If you have a resit fee on your account from January 2024, we will cancel your charge.
Overseas resit fees
When you need to resit examinations overseas, your host venue may charge you.
The University does not have control over these fees and does not receive any income from them.
We no longer charge an administration fee for exams taken overseas. This is part of our 2024 policy change to not charge for resits. If you have a £50 administration fee for overseas exams in January 2024, we will cancel your charge. Do not pay the charge, you can ignore it and we will remove it.
If you have already paid the charge, we will refund this back to you by your method of payment. Please allow us 28 days to process this. You do not need to contact your school, or the Fees team to ask for a refund.
Fees for resitting a year
If you need to retake all or part of an academic year, you will need to pay tuition fees for this. Tuition fees are different from resit fees.
