Module evaluation

Module evaluation is an opportunity for you to give feedback on your module's relevance, effectiveness and efficiency.

Your feedback is anonymous and should be critical and constructive.

It’s important because it helps seminar tutors and programme leaders drive change.

About module evaluations

All students get to give feedback on modules they’ve taken. The way you provide feedback can vary depending on your school.

Your feedback helps your school, faculty, and the University understand the student experience. They can establish what is working well and make improvements where necessary.

Official complaints

Module evaluations are not for raising official complaints or grievances with individuals.

Refer to the student complaints page for more information about complaints. You can also contact the Secretariat.

How we acknlowedge your feedback

Staff respond to module evaluation surveys on a module-by-module basis. You may receive a report from your module leader or another staff member. This outlines how they’re reflecting on your feedback.

If you have any questions about this, email the Leeds Partnership team at theleedspartnership@leeds.ac.uk.

Who sees your module feedback

Your anonymous responses are shared with your module leader. Responses may be seen by your programme leader, seminar tutors, or other relevant staff members.

Broad statistical results and text analysis from multiple modules may be shared more widely.

Module evaluation data is collected, collated and processed centrally and confidentially. Your identity won’t be shared outside of the central processing teams.

In very rare cases, we may seek to follow up on the comment. This is usually when a comment raises serious concerns about an individual’s safety or wellbeing.

How to complete module evaluation

Your feedback should be responsible, accessible, and respectful. It should aim to help the university reflect, develop, and improve.

Follow The Leeds Partnership policy of dignity and mutual respect.

You can also use the five tips below as a guideline when filling out module evaluations:

  • Be respectful: Feedback should never be derogatory or based on race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age or other protected or personal characteristics.
  • Be depersonalised: Keep your feedback to learning, not about individual teachers. Avoid criticising individual staff members and making personal and emotional comments.

Instead of: "I didn’t like [name]’s lectures”

This would be more effective: “At times I found the way we moved between topics in lectures to be confusing – I would find it easier if more signposting was used."

  • Be balanced: Comment on both the positives and negatives. This helps us to see what works and make necessary adjustments.
  • Be accurate and specific: Give evidence-led feedback, not sweeping generalisations or emotional reactions.

Instead of: “We were really able to listen in class.”

This would be more effective: “The slides were shared in advance of each lecture, and this made it easier for me to follow what was being said in class.”

  • Be constructive: Feedback is most effective when it offers alternative solutions or suggestions. By helping to develop solutions, you partner with staff to enhance learning.
