When you're ready to return to your research after a period of absence, you may benefit from a phased return to study—especially if you're coming back from medical leave or a longer break.

A phased return allows you use some of your annual or additional leave entitlement to gradually increase your study hours over time, helping you ease back into your research at a manageable pace.

Phased returns are usually arranged in four-week blocks, with the number of study hours agreed in advance.  At the end of each block, your progress will be reviewed. Although extensions can be considered where necessary, the aim is to support you to return fully to your studies as soon as is reasonably possible.

If you're planning a phased return to study, speak with your Graduate School to discuss the best approach and ensure everything is recorded correctly.
