Degree classification for online courses

Credit requirements for passing your course

The University of Leeds Rules for Award state that students must attempt and pass the following to be eligible for their award:

Postgraduate Certificate

  • Attempt: 60 credits
  • Pass: 60 credits

Postgraduate Certificate candidates must enrol for, and pass four 15-credit modules.

Masters

  • Attempt: 180 credits
  • Pass: 150 credits

Masters students must enrol for nine 15-credit modules and one 45-credit Project module. They must pass at least seven 15-credit modules as well as the 45-credit Project module to be eligible for the Masters award.

If a student passes nine 15-credit modules but fails their Project, they will be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma and receive a transcript to verify the full credits they achieved.

Students must make a reasonable attempt at each of the modules for their programme. The final degree classification is calculated from the marks from all modules attempted, not only the ones passed. This allows Masters students to fail a maximum of two 15-credits modules but still pass the programme overall if their average across all attempted modules (180 credits) is 50 or higher.

Postgraduate Certificate classification calculations

The award of Postgraduate Certificate is awarded to any student who passes a minimum of 60 credits. For students registered for a Postgraduate Certificate programme route, the modules required for a named award are available on the Programme Catalogue.

For students registered on a Masters programme route who may need to withdraw from the programme may be eligible for either a named Postgraduate Certificate exit award or an alternative Postgraduate Certificate depending on the modules you have passed.

If a student takes a module that is not named in the Programme Catalogue (or has additional rules eg mutually exclusive) it will be designated as Supernumerary on your official transcript and will not be used for classification purposes. Students are only permitted to take a maximum of 20 Supernumerary credits which limits Digital Education Service students to one additional 15-credit taught module.

If you are currently on a Postgraduate Certificate route, or will need to withdraw after passing 60 credits, email the Digital Education Service at DESStudents@leeds.ac.uk for further information.
