The Duties of a Doctor

A reading of the Duties of a Doctor, a modern restatement of the Hippocratic Oath, will be led by Associate Professor Michelle Ellwood

Patients must be able to trust doctors with their lives and health. To justify that trust we must show respect for human life and we promise to:

  • Make the care of our patients our first concern
  • Protect and promote the health of patients and the public
  • Provide a good standard of practice and care
  • Keep our professional knowledge and skills up to date
  • Recognise and work within the limits of our competence
  • Work with colleagues in the ways that best serve patients’ interests
  • Treat patients as individuals and respect their dignity
  • Treat patients politely and considerately
  • Respect patients’ right to confidentiality
  • Work in partnership with patients
  • Listen to patients and respond to their concerns and preferences
  • Give patients the information they want or need in a way they can understand
  • Respect patients’ right to reach decisions with us about their treatment and care
  • Support patients in caring for themselves to improve and maintain their health
  • Be honest and open and act with integrity
  • Act without delay if we have good reason to believe that we or a colleague may be putting patients at risk
  • Never discriminate unfairly against patients or colleagues
  • Never abuse our patients’ trust in us or the public’s trust in the profession
  • We are personally accountable for our professional practice and must always be prepared to justify our decisions and actions

The Duties of the Clinical Dental Team

A reading of the Duties of the Clinical Dental Team, will be led by Dr Alan Mighell

  • Recognise and promote the value of diversity
  • Treat equally all persons who seek my care
  • Never discriminate unfairly against patients or colleagues
  • Respect patients’ right to confidentiality
  • Be aware of my personal capabilities and limitations, striving always to improve my practice
  • Actively seek to expand my knowledge and skills, keeping abreast of advances in health care
  • Work with other members of the health care team to provide compassionate and effective care of patients
  • Use my knowledge and experience to contribute to an improved community
