How to complete your identity check
Before you start a new qualification at the University, you will need to complete an online identity check.
You must provide:
- your student number
- a passport-style photograph
- a scan or photograph of your identity documents.

When to complete your online identity check
- UK and Ireland students: up to 30 days before your official start date.
- International students (including EU/EEA/Swiss): as soon as possible once you have arrived in the UK.
How to complete your online identity check
- Go to the online identity check form.
- You will need your University username and password to access the online identity check form. You will need to register to get these. Find out how to register with the University.
Issues accessing the online identity check form
If you see a permission error when trying to open the form, you may be logged into a different Microsoft account. You will need to:
- Open www.office.com.
- Select your initials/photo and sign out.
- Close the browser that you are using.
- Re-open the browser and go to www.office.com and log in using your University of Leeds email and password.
- Re-open the Online Identity Check Form.
Alternatively, try using a private browsing window to access the form.
After you have completed your online identity check
UK and Ireland/EU/EEA/Swiss students
- You will receive an email inviting you to collect your student card.
- If you have an approved student loan, we will notify the Student Loan Company to allow your payments to be released as scheduled.
International students
- You will receive an email invitation to collect your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) and student card – please note this may take around a week.
- If you already have your BRP or are not studying on a Tier 4/student visa, you will receive an email invitation to collect your student card.
- Distance/off-campus learners can apply for their student card remotely.
Documents you need to complete your identity check
Students from the UK and Ireland
When completing the identity check you will need to upload an image of your passport information page.
If you do not have a passport and you have a loan approved with the Student Loans Company you can upload an image of a UK Driving Licence (provisional or full licence).
If you do not have a passport and you are not receiving student finance from the Student Loans Company you will need to upload an image of your birth/adoption certificate with a completed Identification Verification form.
Students with European Settled or pre-settled status (EUSS)
When completing the identity check you will need to upload an image of your passport information page or an image of the front and back of your national ID card.
Share Code – Obtain your share code by visiting the GOV.UK view and prove your immigration status site. Please make sure you choose ‘something else’ as the option when asked for the purpose of the check, this will ensure the share code is for Right to Study, not for Right to Work or Right to rent.
Students with a Digital Student visa
You will receive a digital visa if you used the ‘UK Immigration: ID Check’ app to complete your visa application.
When completing the identity check you will need to upload:
- An image of your passport information page.
- Your Share Code. You can get your share code by visiting the GOV.UK view and prove your immigration status site. Please make sure you choose ‘something else’ as the option when asked for the purpose of the check, this will ensure the share code is for Right to Study, not for Right to Work or Right to rent.
- An image of your Grant/Decision email issued to you by UKVI. This will contain your visa restrictions and sponsor details.
- Evidence of the date you entered the UK. For example, an entry stamp in your passport, boarding pass or plane ticket.
If you were already in the UK when you applied for your current student visa we do not need to see evidence of your date of entry.
Students with a Student Biometric Residence Permit (BRP): University of Leeds BRP collection location
Check your BRP collection location – You can check your BRP collection location in the payment section of your online visa application.
If you applied for your visa outside of the UK, your BRP collection location may be on your UKVI decision letter.
You will receive a BRP if you did not use the ‘UK Immigration: ID Check’ app to make your visa application, or if you are a national of one of the countries on the UKVI Visa National list, and are in the UK for more than six months.

You will need to upload:
- An image of your passport information page.
- An image of your vignette (travel visa) that has been stamped at the UK border. If your vignette was not stamped because you used an e-gate at the UK border please upload your vignette and proof of the date you entered the UK. For example, a boarding pass or plane ticket. Your date of arrival in the UK needs to be within the valid period of your travel vignette.
If your current visa (BRP) states ‘Leave to Remain’ you will not have an associated vignette and do not need to upload a vignette for the ID check.
Students with a Student Biometric Residence Permit (BRP): Other BRP collection location (eg Post Office)
Check your BRP collection location – You can check your BRP collection location in the payment section of your online visa application.
If you applied for your visa outside of the UK, your BRP collection location may be on your UKVI decision letter.
You will receive a BRP if you did not use the ‘UK Immigration: ID Check’ app to make your visa application, or if you are a national of one of the countries on the UKVI Visa National list, and are in the UK for more than six months.

You will need to upload:
- An image of your passport information page.
- An image of your vignette (travel visa) that has been stamped at the UK border. If your vignette was not stamped because you used an e-gate at the UK border please upload your vignette and proof of the date you entered the UK. For example, a boarding pass or plane ticket. Your date of arrival in the UK needs to be within the valid period of your travel vignette.
- An image of the front and back of BRP. You will need to collect your BRP before completing the online ID check form.
Please note that if your current visa (BRP) states ‘Leave to Remain’ you will not have an associated vignette and do not need to upload a vignette for the ID check.
Students studying for six months or less
You will need to upload:
- An image of your passport information page.
- An image of your Visitor or Student Visa that has been stamped at the UK border. If your visa was not stamped because you used an e-gate at the UK border please upload your visa and proof of the date you entered the UK. For example, a boarding pass or plane ticket.
Or
- If you are not required to apply for a visa before entering the UK for six months or less, an image of the stamp you received at the UK border. If you did not receive an entry stamp because you used an e-gate at the UK border please upload proof of the date you entered the UK. For example, a boarding pass or plane ticket.
Or
- An image of your Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). Your ETA email and the stamp you received at the UK border.
Students with other types of immigration permission
If you are a PBS Dependant, Short Term Study, Indefinite Leave to Remain, Refugee, Asylum seeker, Settlement, Hong Kong BNO, Skilled Worker (previously Tier 2) you will need to upload:
- An image of your passport information page. Or, if you do not have a passport, your travel document.
- An image of your stamped vignette (travel visa) that has been stamped at the UK border. If your vignette was not stamped because you used an e-gate at the UK border please upload your vignette and proof of the date you entered the UK. For example, a boarding pass or plane ticket.
- An image of your current immigration permission, for example a visa vignette or front and back of your BRP.
Or
- Provide your Share Code. You can get your share code by visiting the GOV.UK view and prove your immigration status site. Please make sure you choose ‘something else’ as the option when asked for the purpose of the check, this will ensure the share code is for Right to Study, not for Right to Work or Right to rent.
If your current visa (BRP) states ‘Leave to Remain’ you will not have an associated vignette and do not need to upload a vignette for the ID check.
Students with an outstanding visa application
You will need to upload:
- An image of your passport information page.
- An image of the front and back of your BRP. If you did not have a BRP for your most recent visa, then please provide a copy of your visa or your eVisa Share Code.
- An image of your stamped vignette (travel visa) that has been stamped at the UK border. If your vignette was not stamped because you used an e-gate at the UK border please upload your vignette and proof of the date you entered the UK. For example, a boarding pass or plane ticket.
- Your visa application submitted with unique application reference number as the proof of visa application made while waiting for the UKVI decision or a copy of the UKVI successful decision email while waiting for new BRP to be delivered
If your current visa (BRP) states ‘Leave to Remain’ you will not have an associated vignette and do not need to upload a vignette for the ID check.
