How to register
You must complete online registration at the start of the academic year, whether you are new or returning student, a postgraduate researcher or on a study abroad or placement year.
It’s important to complete registration as soon as possible, before you start your studies. If you don’t register by the deadline, you will be withdrawn from your course.
Being able to log in to the University systems with your username and password does not mean you are registered.
If you are having difficulty registering or use assistive technology, you can contact our Student Information Service who will help you.
What you will need to register
Before you register, make sure you have all the information you need to complete your registration. The information you need will depend on whether you are a new or returning student.
New students
To complete online registration, you will need:
Fee payment information
- If you’re sponsored, email your sponsor letter to the Sponsors team: Sponsors@leeds.ac.uk.
- If you’re not sponsored, you may need to pay your fees, provide UK bank details, or show proof of Student Finance support.
- Contact the Fees team if you have any questions about providing fees payment information.
Address details
- Confirm your home, term-time and emergency contact addresses and phone numbers.
Student number
- A nine-digit number found on your offer letter, welcome email, or applicant portal. You can use it if you need help registering or for tuition fee matters.
Original academic qualifications
- In some cases your academic qualifications must be verified in person before you can complete online registration. If this is the case, you will see a ‘hold’ message when you log into Registration with instructions about what you need to do.
Returning students
If you are a returning student, the registration process is the same as for new students. Use the How to register guide in the next section.
You may need the following information, depending on your circumstances:
Returning from temporary leave
- You must confirm your return with your School as soon as possible, as you will not be able to register until you do.
- If you are returning from temporary leave due to medical reasons, you will need to provide a ‘fit to return’ medical note to your school before you can register.
- If your student card has expired, complete online registration before exchanging your old card for a new one.
Returning as an international student who is resitting or has taken temporary leave
- Email the International Student Advice and Support team at studentvisaadvice@leeds.ac.uk for advice about your visa requirements.
Returning after a period of suspension as a postgraduate researcher
- Your graduate school will contact you to confirm your return to studies and detail any documents you need to provide.
- Find out more about absences, suspensions and extensions
Resitting your year as an external student
- You will not be required to complete online registration (and are not considered a registered student) when resitting your assessments externally, but you do need to apply for your resits. Apply via the Results and Resit Application page (available through Minerva).
How to register
It is important that you complete registration before the registration deadline for your course.
Use our step-by-step guide in the next section to help you complete your registration.
We also recommend you watch our Video Guide to Online Registration, a walkthrough with tips on how to avoid and resolve errors:

Log in and start registration
- If you are a new student, make sure you activate your IT account first.
- Go to Student Services or log into Minerva and go to the ‘How to Register’ page.
- If you see a ‘hold’ message when you log in, follow the instructions or email the address listed for more information.
- You will start on the Home tab. A Registration link follows the page title. You can also find another link to the same page on the ‘Registration’ and ‘Student Records’ tab. Both links will take you to the ‘Registration Checklist’. Links to each of the seven steps of online registration are also available from the checklist.
- The checklist will show your progress as you complete each step. You can save your progress using the ‘Checklist’ button at the end of each step and log out if you need to.
- You do not have to complete the steps in order, but Step 5 must be done before Step 6, or you will get an error. You must also complete the first six steps before you will be able to complete Step 7.
Registration step 1: Personal Details 1
- You’ll be asked to confirm some basic details like your name and nationality.
- Make sure your family name, first name, middle name, and legal name are complete and match your passport or other official documents.
- If you prefer to be called by a name that is different to your legal first name, you can enter this into the preferred name field. This name will appear on Minerva, your University email, and other systems.
- Confirm if you would like to register to vote in Leeds.
- Confirm if you are a parent or carer.
Registration step 2: Personal Details 2
- You’ll be asked equality monitoring questions. This includes questions about any disabilities you might have. You don’t have to tell us about disabilities, but if you do, the information will be used by the Disability Services team to offer academic support you might need.
- If you have more than one disability, select ‘Multiple disabilities’ and use the checkboxes at the bottom of the disability section to select which these are. Please don’t use these checkboxes unless you have selected ‘Multiple disabilities’.
Registration step 3: Address Details
- You’ll be asked to provide your permanent home address, your term time address, and full contact details for your emergency contact, in that order.
- Your emergency contact cannot be yourself.
- If you are an international student, you should put the address in your home country as your permanent home address.
If you know where you will be living during term-time
- If you are going to be staying in University accommodation, this should already be showing as your term-time address so you don’t need to add it.
- Each address must have a Valid From Date. You can’t put any date here that is before the current date, therefore:
- If you have already moved into the address, use the current date.
- If you haven’t moved in yet, use the future date. Be aware, the address won’t be active on our system until that date arrives.
- You also won’t be able to see or update the future address through Student Services, as it only displays your current addresses.
- Each address also needs at least one phone number. You must provide a main contact number, including area and country codes.
If you don’t know where you will be living during term-time
If you don’t know where you will be living during term-time, do not enter any information for the term time address. You will need to enter a phone number. Click ‘Continue’ and you will be able to proceed.
Registration step 4: Sports Membership
On this page, you’ll find information about membership at the Edge, the University’s sport and fitness complex and Great Food at Leeds, the catering service on campus. You don’t have to do anything here, except tell us if you are interested in membership for the Edge. You won’t be asked to sign up.
Registration step 5: Programme Details
- You’ll be asked to confirm the details of your course (programme of study). The information should already be filled in from your student record.
- Check the details are correct, including the course name and year of study.
- You cannot make any changes to the information on this page, so if it is wrong, save your progress and contact your academic school. They will update your student record, so you can return to this part of the registration.
Registration step 6: Fee Payment
On this screen, you need to confirm how your tuition fees will be covered. Depending on your circumstances, you may also need to make a payment before you can complete this step.
- Your fees are affected by your course, so you must complete Step 5 first.
- If you are funded by a loan from a UK government student finance body, or you are fully funded by a sponsorship or scholarship, the information should already be showing and you just need to confirm it is correct.
- If you are not funded by any of these methods and are paying your own fees in full or in part, you need to make a payment to complete registration. This can be the full fee, or a portion of it if you have an instalment plan.
- If you have a student loan for postgraduate study, you’ll need to set up PG Loan instalment plan to pay your tuition fees on this screen, before you can continue.
- The University’s online payment system is linked on this page. International students can use Flywire, which is a trusted and secure payment method. Find out more about paying your fees.
- It can take a few days for payment to be processed and added to your account, so we recommend you do this as soon as possible so you don’t risk missing the registration deadline.
- Remember that if you need to wait for an update, you will still need to log back in and complete steps 6 and 7 when you’re able to do so.
If you need any help with the fee payment step, please contact the fees team.
Registration step 7: Declaration
On this screen, you will need to:
- confirm that the information you have provided so far is correct and finalise your registration
- agree to the University of Leeds Student Contract and Privacy Policy.
You can only complete this step after you have completed the other six steps.
Viewing your registration certificate
- Once you have completed your registration, you will see a registration certificate which is just to confirm you have completed the process.
- You cannot use this certificate as official proof of your student status with third parties such as sponsors or government. For that, you need a Registration Status Certificate.
Next step after registration
If you are a new student, you also need to complete an identity check before you start your course.
Start dates and deadlines for registration
When to start:
- You can begin online registration one month before your official start date (new students) or the anniversary of your start date (returning students). You should receive communications from the University with guidance on registration.
- You should start as soon as you are able to, because it can take a while for the University to process some of the checks it needs to.
Deadlines:
- You should complete registration within two weeks of starting your course or return date if possible.
- If you are not registered within four weeks of your start or return date, you will be withdrawn from your studies and lose access to your IT account. If you are not fully registered by this deadline due to delays in documentation or fee payment, you should speak to your parent school to discuss next steps.
The exact dates you can start and the deadlines you need to complete registration by depend on when you start your course. Most students who are starting at the beginning of the new academic year will be starting in September or October:
