Bradford Access

Find out about how your study at Bradford on the Clinical Sciences course affects your funding on the Leeds Medicine course.

BRADFORD STUDY AND NHS BURSARY FUNDING

The Bradford Access course has been part of a Widening Participation programme negotiated with the Student Loans Company, the GMC, The University of Leeds,  The University of Bradford, the NHS Executive and HEFCE (replaced by OfS).

New Scheme Medics

From 2021/22, the Bradford access course is being replaced by the in-house University of Leeds Gateway Year To Medicine. However, Clinical Science students already at Bradford (who started in 2020 or earlier) and Bradford Access students already at Leeds will continue with the current scheme.

Current Scheme Medics

Students already on the Medicine programme at the University of Leeds from the Clinical Sciences course at the University of Bradford (and students currently at Bradford and already in progress on the Clinical Sciences course)  have had two main routes into The University of Leeds Medicine programme.  Approximately 50% of Bradford students have completed the foundation year at The University of Bradford and then progressed into YR1 Medicine at Leeds;  others may have completed the Clinical Science foundation plus YR1 at the University of Bradford and then have progressed directly into YR2 of Medicine at Leeds.

The foundation year at the University of Bradford is integral to your Medicine course at The University of Leeds.  Being on the Bradford Access Medicine With Integral Foundation Year 6YR course at Leeds indicates that your foundation year at Bradford is not previous study, but is integral to your course.  Should you need to repeat a year at Leeds, you will be expected to obtain full funding from SFE (as long as you have no other previous study).

Students progressing directly into YR2 Medicine , having studied the Clinical Sciences YR1 without having also undertaken the foundation year of Clinical Sciences,  will have transferred into the MBCHB 5YR programme .

For Bradford Access students transferring into the Medicine programme with an integral Foundation year , the 4th academic year will fall in the 5th year of study,  and therefore attract NHS funding for the final two years of Medicine.

BRADFORD STUDY AND REPEAT FUNDING

The rules about how funding works where there have been integral study years at Bradford plus repeat years is complex and the Funding team can advise.  However, here is an example of where the 5th year of study occurs where a Bradford Access student has repeated an academic year.
