Providing bank details

If you hold a scholarship or a studentship from the University you may receive mainentance payments. They may also be known as a stipend.

To receive University funding you must first provide the University with details of your UK bank account.

We are only able to make maintenance payments into UK based accounts.

As a fraud prevention measure you must only enter bank details for a personal account that is in your name. Entering the personal bank details of another person may result in a payment being stopped as a potential fraud risk.

If you need to open an account before you are in the UK, although we cannot help you with this there are some organisations that do provide this service, some examples are:

Please note: we are not supporting or endorsing these companies or their services. You must make your own decision on whether to use them.

We make payments by BACS (Bankers Automated Clearing System).

We can’t make direct payments to international (including Republic of Ireland) bank accounts.

When payments will be received

Payments are made monthly and in advance.

Some international scholarship award holders will be paid quarterly and in advance.

We process payments on Tuesdays and you will need to share your bank details at least a week in advance to receive your payment.

Weekends and bank holidays can affect the date you will receive your payment.

For budgeting purposes we recommend you set up your direct debits and standing orders on the first day of the month.

Disruptions to scholarship payments

Maintenance payments can be delayed if you:

  • have not registered
  • have withdrawn from your studies
  • are under examination
  • have been suspended
  • have completed your programme
  • are classed as an external student.

Payment can only be made in these cases if your school or faculty has agreed to pay and they have shared their decision with the Funding team.
