Intercalation

An intercalated year can be an enriching addition to your degree and there are different ways that this important year is financially supported.  The Financial support depends upon the stage of your progression and the level of your study during the intercalated year.

The information and figures provided in these pages are for illustrative purposes only and assumes that no previous or repeated study has been undertaken.  Your awarding authority or NHS Student Bursaries will confirm your personal eligibility.

  • Students cannot receive any undergraduate funding during a postgraduate intercalated year.
  • Students apply instead for postgraduate funding in the form of a Masters Loan from the Student Loans Company.
  • A Masters Loan may not cover the full cost of study in this year, as it is a contribution towards your costs.
  • Masters Loans are paid in instalments directly to you rather than to the University, so you will need to arrange to pay your own fees from this money to the University's Fees team.
  • To find out the cost of your tuition fees for your postgraduate intercalated year please consult the University of Leeds course finder.
  • When you return to Medicine or Dentistry following Intercalation, you will be able to apply for the NHS Bursary plus the SLC reduced rate Maintenance Loan.

  • The NHS can contribute to this postgraduate intercalated year which can consist of a NMT tuition fee grant, a NMT living costs grant and a means-tested monthly living costs grant.
  • To find out the cost of your tuition fees for your postgraduate intercalated year please consult the University of Leeds course finder.
  • You may need to top up the funding for the tuition fees yourself.  The NHS Bursary will not cover the whole charge (i.e. only up to the undergraduate maximum of £9250*).
  • Students intercalating at postgraduate level in their 5th year of study cannot receive the reduced rate maintenance loan during the intercalated year as the reduced rate Maintenance Loan is undergraduate funding.
  • Students cannot apply for a Masters Loan when intercalating at postgraduate level in their 5th year of study, because eligibility for the NHS Bursary makes students ineligible for the Masters Loan.
  • When you return to your undergraduate studies in Medicine following your postgraduate intercalated year, you will be eligible to apply for the reduced rate maintenance loan alongside the NHS Bursary.

Funding is therefore available, but limited, for postgraduate intercalation, and students need to budget realistically to ensure both fees and living costs are covered for the year.

How much funding might I receive?

The following figures are for illustrative purposes only, are based on *2023/24 figures for a student not living with parents, and are provided as a guide to approximately how much funding might be available to you.  Funding in this area is complex and subject to change. The University has no control over such changes and can take no responsibility for changes to actual funding available. You must check with your funding authority before making financial decisions.
