Postgraduate online code of practice on attendance

  1. According to the Student Contract and the Partnership agreement, students are expected to attend all teaching activities. For taught postgraduate programmes, attendance is defined as accessing online information through the University of Leeds Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), Minerva or through Coursera.
  2. Students are strongly encouraged to attend the weekly synchronous sessions and attendance will be monitored. Learning materials built into the online modules enable staff to monitor engagement e.g. completion of activities and posting to discussion fora.
  3. Students are strongly encouraged to actively participate in the module discussion forum threads to participate fully in the module.
  4. Staff will use reporting tools from Minerva or Coursera to monitor which students have accessed the online materials, and where a student has failed to engage an email reminder will be sent to the student.
  5. If the level of student attendance is unsatisfactory, the University’s Unsatisfactory Work, Attendance and Engagement Procedure will be initiated. Unsatisfactory attendance is defined as no engagement for a 2 week period, including accessing online information through Minerva or Coursera, or contacting the Student Success Advisor/Student Education Service team.
  6. Timetabled sessions will only be cancelled in exceptional and unavoidable circumstances and alternative arrangements made to minimise disruption for students.
  7. Staff will all be made aware of the policy on non-attendance to prevent variability in the treatment of students.
  8. This Code of Practice will be reviewed annually by the student:staff committee.
