Postgraduate online resits

If you are studying a postgraduate online course and you fail a module, you may be eligible for a resit opportunity. Find out about different types of resits and the schedule for when you can take them.

In line with University assessment policy, you are permitted one resit opportunity after failing a module.

Types of resit

Standard capped resit

If you do not achieve the pass mark of 50 for a 15-credit module, in line with University of Leeds policy you will be offered one resit attempt. The resit mark will be capped at 50, and both marks will be displayed on your transcript. There are no fees to pay for a standard resit.

For Digital Education Service students, you will usually be expected to complete the resit the next time the module is being delivered. Depending on the module, this will either be 6 or 12 months after your original attempt teaching period. Please refer to the Digital Education Service resit schedule and framework for further information.

You will not access the current run of the module; you will access the learning materials from your original attempt and submit your resit assessment(s) within the designated resit submission area.

You will not normally be permitted to engage with another module at the same time and so the resit will have an impact on your overall study time.

To accept your standard resit attempt, you must respond to the resit invitation sent to you from the Digital Education Service Assessment Team. This will be sent to your University of Leeds email address only, and you will receive it during the teaching period immediately before the resit attempt will be taken. Failing to respond to the invitation may mean a resit forfeit is recorded on your record. You will not be offered a further attempt, and will have irrevocably failed that module. Please note that you cannot usually request Temporary Leave to avoid or delay taking a resit.

To see the impact of an irrevocable fail on your overall degree outcome, please see the Programme Rules page.

Resit due to mitigating circumstances

If you have mitigating circumstances that prevent you from engaging with any module and/or submitting coursework, you should submit a request for additional consideration using the University’s Mitigating Circumstances process as soon as you are aware of the impact.

If you are granted a resit due to mitigating circumstances it will be a Further Attempt – First Attempt resit. You will be able to take the module again the next time it is delivered, and you will access the live module content along with other students. Please refer to the Digital Education Service resit schedule and framework for further information.

The mark for your original attempt will be overwritten on your record. The only mark on your transcript will be for the Further Attempt – First Attempt module. The mark is not capped, and there is no additional fee to pay.

You will not normally be permitted to engage with another module at the same time and so the Further Attempt – First Attempt resit will have an impact on your overall study time.

To accept your Further Attempt – First Attempt resit, you must respond to the resit invitation sent to you from the Digital Education Service Assessment Team. This will be sent to your University of Leeds email address only, and you will receive it during the teaching period immediately before the resit attempt will be taken. If you fail to respond to the invitation, your original module mark will stand and you will be offered a standard capped resit the next time the module is delivered. You will not be permitted to take the Further Attempt - First Attempt resit at a later date/amend your decision.

Revise and resubmit resit – 30- and 45-credit project modules only

If you do not achieve the pass mark of 50 for your Project module, but the markers deem your attempt sufficiently researched and outlined that it can be improved upon to achieve a pass mark, they will recommend a Revise and Resubmit resit.

The resit mark will be capped at 50, and both marks will be displayed on your transcript. There are no fees to pay for a Revise and Resubmit resit.

For Digital Education Service students, you will usually be expected to begin the Revise and Resubmit resit the next time the module is being delivered, and you will be given one teaching period (8 weeks) in which to resubmit.

You will not access the current run of the module; you will access the learning materials from your original attempt and submit your resit assessment(s) within the designated resit submission area.

To accept your Revise and Resubmit resit attempt, you must respond to the Project resit invitation sent to you from the Digital Education Service Assessment Team. This will be sent to your University of Leeds email address only, and you will receive it during the teaching period immediately before the resit attempt will be taken. Failing to respond to the invitation may mean a resit forfeit is recorded on your record. You will not be offered a further attempt, and will have irrevocably failed that module.

Please note that you cannot usually request Temporary Leave to delay taking a Revise and Resubmit resit.

To see the impact of an irrevocable fail on your overall degree outcome, please see the Programme Rules page.

Unreasonably poor attempt resit - 30- and 45-credit project modules only

If you do not achieve the pass mark of 50 for your Project and the markers deem it to be an unreasonably poor attempt (including no submission at all) you will be offered a capped resit with teaching.

The resit will be capped at 50, and you will be expected to engage fully with the module as it is being delivered. You are expected to pay the full Project module fee again if you accept this resit.

To accept your resit attempt, you must respond to the Project resit invitation sent to you from the Digital Education Service Assessment Team. This will be sent to your University of Leeds email address only, and you will receive it during the teaching period immediately before the resit attempt will be taken. Failing to respond to the invitation may mean a resit forfeit is recorded on your record. Failure to pay the full module fee for the resit may mean your work is not marked and you will receive a mark of 0. You will not be offered a further attempt, and will have irrevocably failed that module. Please note that you cannot usually request Temporary Leave to delay taking a Project resit.

To see the impact of an irrevocable fail on your overall degree outcome, please see the Programme Rules page.

Forfeiting a resit attempt

If you choose to forfeit your resit, and your Programme Rules permit you to continue with up to two 15-credit modules as irrevocable fails, you will be expected to continue with the next module available to you in the teaching period. The Digital Education Service team will contact you to confirm what your alternative module is, and you will be required to make payment to enrol and engage as normal.

If you forfeit the resit, should still engage with your studies for the teaching period if there is another module available to you. If you cannot engage with your studies at the time, you will be expected to complete a Pause form/Temporary Leavers form to confirm your activity for the teaching period. Please note you cannot take a pause or temporary leave to avoid taking a resit.

If you have no available module to study, this will be recorded as an Enforced Pause for you.

If you forfeit a resit attempt, you cannot amend this decision once the specified deadline has passed and the original module mark will stand.

Digital Education Service resit schedule and framework

As a student on a Digital Education Service programme, you study one module at a time and your academic calendar is divided into six 8-week teaching periods. Modules are delivered during the same teaching period(s) each academic year, with some being taught once per year and others being taught multiple times.

You must confirm your acceptance of the resit opportunity via the Resit Response form by the specified deadline. If you do not confirm your acceptance by the specified deadline, you will be deemed to have forfeited the resit attempt.

Foundation modules

Foundation modules should be attempted before you can move to the Development/Advanced modules. If you have a resit for a Foundation module, this will take precedence over any taught Development modules.

Development/advanced modules

Where permitted, the defined resit schedule allows you to complete their resit within 6 months of the original attempt. This will only be permitted where you are not expected to study a taught module, or have been granted a Further Attempt - First Attempt resit for a different module. You cannot take Temporary Leave during a teaching period when you are expected to take your resit opportunity unless you have Mitigating Circumstances.

Resit schedule

The Digital Education Service has set a module resit schedule, designed to ensure that you will minimise the time you are required to wait before completing a resit attempt for any module while also providing clear structure to enable study planning.

  • Modules taught in September/October will have resits in the following March/April.
  • Modules taught in November/December will have resits in the following May/June.
  • Modules taught in January/February will have resits in the following July/August.
  • Modules taught in March/April will have resits in the following September/October.
  • Modules taught in May/June will have resits in the following November/December.
  • Modules taught in July/August will have resits in the following January/February.

Exceptions to the schedule

Research Project Modules

Research Project modules (usually 45 credits) that begin in every teaching period will provide a resit opportunity in every teaching period. The deadline set will be determined by the date by which provisional marks and feedback are received, as well as the type of Project resit being offered.

Temporary Leave

It is not permitted to take temporary leave in order to avoid/delay taking a resit unless you have Mitigating Circumstances, which can be appropriately evidenced. Applications for Additional Consideration must be made via the Mitigating Circumstances Procedure.

If you are already on a period of temporary leave when a resit period is available, you are not expected to complete the resit during a break. You will be permitted to complete the resit during the next time the resit is offered when you have re-joined your studies.

Academic Misconduct Resubmissions

Academic Misconduct resubmission deadlines will usually align with the next available deadline for that module – this could be the teaching period or the resit period deadline. You may submit your academic misconduct resubmission at any point before the deadline.
