Working in the UK after study
If you are an international student and you would like to work in the UK after graduating, you need to be aware of the immigration rules that apply to you. There are several different visas available to graduating students, with different requirements and application routes.
This page provides an overview, and you can also read:
- working after studies information from the UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA)
- UK Government information about visas
If, after reading these pages, you still have questions, you can call the UKCISA advice line or seek independent legal advice.
Graduate visa
A Graduate visa gives you permission to stay in the UK for at least two years after successfully completing a degree course in the UK. The Graduate route does not need sponsorship or endorsement by an employer or by your institution.

Skilled worker (formerly Tier 2)
A Skilled Worker visa allows you to come to or stay in the UK but only for an eligible job with an approved employer. This visa has replaced the Tier 2 (General) work visa.
Read information about the Skilled Worker Visa on the UK Government website.
Other work visas
There are other work visas available if you are not eligible for the Graduate or Skilled Worker visa. Read about other types of work visas you can apply for within the UK on the UKCISA website.
Applying for your new visa
If you're planning to stay in the UK, you must make an immigration application before your current permission expires.
Alternatively, you can make applications from outside the UK, but carefully check the criteria as there are different requirements. Read about work visas you can apply for from outside the UK on the UKCISA website.
