Extend your Language Centre visa in September

If you’re a Language Centre pre-sessional student starting a new course at the University, follow these instructions to extend your Student visa in the UK.

First, read our presentation on the visa extension process (PowerPoint).

Prepare to apply

You’ll need your new Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). It will emailed to you by Taught Postgraduate Admissions (if you'll be studying a Masters degree) or Undergraduate Admissions (if you'll be studying a Bachelors degree) after you complete your pre-sessional course.

If you’ve not received your CAS by Friday 16 September, email the Admissions Enquiries team at study@leeds.ac.uk.

Apply to extend your Student visa

After you’ve received your CAS, complete the online Student visa application form on the UKVI website. Use the online visa application guide (PDF) when applying.

If you want your application checked by a Student Visa Advisor before you submit it, stop completing the form after inputting your CAS number.

Documents you must provide

It’s your responsibility to collect all the documents you need to support your application. The Student visa application form will tell you which documents you need. It will be some or all of the following:

  • Your current passport.
  • Payment for your application. You will need a debit or credit card to pay for your application.
  • Sponsor letter if you are financially sponsored by a government or international company.
  • Financial documents, e.g. bank statements, bank letters, savings books, etc. You must hold £10,224 (for your living expenses), plus any outstanding tuition fees. This total amount must be held in your bank account for at least 28 days before you apply for your visa, and your bank statement must be no more than 31 days old on the date you apply.
  • If you are relying on money held in your parents’ bank accounts, you will need:
    • Your original birth certificate or household register
    • Your parents’ bank statements
    • A signed and dated letter from your parents confirming they are supporting you financially during your studies.
  • Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS).
  • ATAS certificate if applicable. If you are studying a course at LUBS, for example, you will not need an ATAS certificate.

If you are from a low-risk country, you don’t need to submit financial or academic document with your application. However, UKVI can request to see them during the decision-making process for the application so you must still ensure you meet these requirements before applying for your visa.

Any documents not in English must be translated into English before you submit them. Find a translator.

Once you’ve submitted your application

After you’ve paid your application fee and Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS), you must submit your supporting documents.

If you have an eVisa or an EU, EUSS or Swiss passport, you will be able to verify your identity and complete your application digitally via the ID Check app.

If you have a visa vignette or cannot use the ID check app to complete your application, you will be required to book an in-person appointment at a UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services (UKVCAS) service point after submitting your visa application.

The address for Leeds UKVCAS service point is:

TLScontact Leeds- VCAS service point Regus, Princes Exchange, Princes Square, Leeds, LS1 4HY, West Yorkshire United Kingdom.

Student visa application costs

UKVI charges the following fees:

  • Standard applications: £490 (decisions made within eight weeks from the date of your UKVCAS appointment.)
  • Priority applications: £990 (decisions made within one week from the date of your UKVCAS appointment.)
  • Super Priority applications: £1,290 (decisions made within 24 hours from the date of your UKVCAS appointment.)

The Immigration Health Surcharge fee is £776 per adult per year and £388 for any period that is less than six months. the IHS fee is calculated by length of the visa, not hte course length.

If your old visa expires before you get a new one

Don’t worry – you won’t be in the UK illegally. As long as you submit and pay for your immigration application online before the expiry date of your current visa, you’re entitled to remain in the UK (on the same conditions) while UKVI considers your application.
