Correcting an error on your visa

Sometimes visas granted by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) contain mistakes. It is important to check your visa carefully and report any errors so they can be corrected.

If you have a question about visa errors that is not covered in the following information, email the Student Visa Advice team at studentvisaadvice@leeds.ac.uk with your student ID number and a share code for your eVisa, or copy of your visa.

Personal details

Make sure that the following details on your visa are all correct with no spelling errors. Check they match the details given on your passport:

  • name
  • date of birth
  • place of birth
  • nationality
  • gender
  • photograph

Length of permission

Your eVisa should cover the full length of your course as stated on your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS), plus additional time before and after your course.

Check to see how long your visa should be valid for:

If your course is 12 months or more

  • Visa start date: up to one month before course start date
  • Length of stay: full length of course plus four months

If your course is 6 to 12 months

  • Visa start date: up to one month before course start date
  • Length of stay: full length of course plus two months

If your course is shorter than six months and is not a pre-sessional course

  • Visa start date: up to seven days before course start date
  • Length of stay: full length of course plus seven days

If your course is a pre-sessional course shorter than six months

  • Visa start date: up to one month before course start date
  • Length of stay: full length of course plus one month

If your BRP expires on 31 December 2024

You may have a BRP that expires on 31 December 2024, when this is earlier than your permission should expire. This is not an error. From 1 January 2025 you will need to prove your immigration status online with an eVisa instead of using a BRP. Your immigration status will not be affected.

Sponsor licence number

If you have applied for a Student visa from outside of the UK, the University of Leeds sponsor licence number H3GNC03A4 should be listed on the entry vignette in your passport. If it is not, your visa needs to be corrected.

Visa category

If you have applied for a Student visa, your visa must say ‘Student’ or ‘Tier 4 General’.

If your visa states ‘Child Student’, ‘Tier 4 Child’ or something else, this is an error which must be corrected. Please email the Student Visa Advice team at studentvisaadvice@leeds.ac.uk for further assistance.

How to apply to have your visa corrected

Corrections to entry vignettes (visa stickers)

Errors noticed before travelling to the UK

You must return to the visa application centre to request a correction.

If your visa start date is after your intended travel date, you must get this corrected before you travel to the UK. You cannot travel to the UK before the start date of your visa.

You can email the Student Visa Advice team at studentvisaadvice@leeds.ac.uk with a copy of your passport and entry vignette and an adviser will let you know if you need to correct it before you travel to the UK.

Errors noticed after arrival in the UK

If there is an error on this vignette and you only notice it after you have successfully arrived in the UK, please email the Student Visa Advice team at studentvisaadvice@leeds.ac.uk for help with getting the error corrected.

Corrections to Biometric Residence Permits (BRP)

Visa applications made outside the UK

You should report the error using the 'report a problem with your new BRP' form on the UKVI website within 10 working days of receiving your BRP. If errors are found, UKVI will advise you of next steps.

If you have been granted less time on your visa than you should have been, please select 'conditions or length of stay' as the reason for error.

Visa applications made inside the UK

If there are errors with the length of or the conditions of your leave, you must submit an application for administrative review within 14 calendar days of receiving your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP). There is an £80 fee for this application which will be refunded to you if a mistake has been made.

For all other errors, including damage or scanning faults, you should use the 'report a problem with your new BRP' form on the UKVI website. This service is free.

If a mistake is found, UKVI will contact you, usually within five working days, advising how the error can be corrected.

eVisa errors

If you have an eVisa, you can check your online immigration status online using the view and prove service on the GOV.UK website. The conditions attached to your permission will be confirmed in the email from UKVI when your visa was granted.

If you applied for your visa from outside the UK, and there are any mistakes in the details or conditions attached to your status, please report errors to UKVI using their online eVisa error reporting form.

If you applied for your visa from inside the UK and there are mistakes in the length of your visa or its conditions, you must submit an application for administrative review within 14 calendar days of receiving the decision. There is an £80 fee for this application which will be refunded to you if a mistake has been made.

If there are errors in your personal details, report errors to UKVI using their online eVisa error reporting form.

After you have received your amended visa

When you receive your new visa, email a new share code for your eVisa or a copy of your amended vignette to the University via BRP@leeds.ac.uk. They will add the details to your student record. Please include your student ID number with your email.
