Staff member: Welcome to Disability Services at the University of Leeds.
We are here to support disabled students in their academic studies. We do this by recommending adjustments to the ways you learn, are taught and are assessed.
You are not alone. We support around 8,000 students at Leeds. That's 20% of the student body.
Disability is a very broad term. You might not have thought of yourself as being disabled before. However, it includes any condition that is likely to last over 12 months and has an impact on your normal daily activities.
We support students with a wide variety of conditions including mental health conditions, sensory impairments, long-term medical conditions, and specific learning difficulties, such as dyslexia, dyspraxia and ADHD.
Accessing support is straightforward and we are here to help you every step of the way.
You'll need to register with our service using our online sign-up form and give supporting information about your disability.
This can be a letter from your doctor, an educational psychologist’s report or details about any arrangements you had previously at school or college.
Our online supporting information checker can help you make sure you've got everything you need.
You can do this as soon as you've applied to Leeds before your studies begin or at any point throughout your time at Leeds but remember the sooner you register, the sooner we can get your support put in place.
What next? Once you're fully registered with our service, we'll create a support summary sheet which we share with your academic department on a strictly need-to-know basis. This shows your lecturers and other teaching staff how best to support you.
You might have adjustments to your learning, such as extensions to deadlines or receiving materials in advance, and to your exams, like extra time or timetabling changes depending on the impact of your disability.
Remember, most disabled students are eligible for Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA). This is a UK government grant that pays for extra support like one-to-one study skills tutors, specialist mentors and equipment. We can help you apply and advise you throughout the process.
We are here for you throughout your time at Leeds. We run daily drop-ins where you can pop in to talk to our friendly team about your support. You can also arrange an online appointment.
