Graduation ceremony eligibility

To attend a graduation ceremony, you need to meet certain eligibility criteria.

Make sure you register your graduation choice in advance, but keep in mind that you’ll need to confirm details like your award status before attending.

Eligibility criteria

To determine if you’re eligible to attend your graduation ceremony, you’ll need to meet the criteria:

Successful completion of your award

Ensure you’ve completed your award.

For taught students, check your award status on Minerva when results are released. Find out more about getting your results.

If you haven’t successfully completed your award, your invitation to the ceremony will be withdrawn.

If you are re-sitting modules

If you apply to resit any modules, you won’t be able to attend a ceremony until after you’ve successfully completed them.

Postgraduate researchers

Postgraduate researchers will be eligible to attend a graduation ceremony if you have been awarded your research degree and your name has appeared on a pass list. You can check your award status in GRAD.

No outstanding tuition fees

For graduation in summer 2026, all outstanding tuition fees must be paid to the University by 19 June 2026.

Any student or postgraduate researcher with unpaid tuition fees after this date will not be able to attend the graduation ceremony. If you’re a sponsored student, ensure your sponsor has paid your fees.

Find out how to pay your fees.

If you have received an Ordinary degree classification

When you check your results, if you receive an Ordinary degree classification and wish to accept it without resitting for an honours degree, you need to accept this classification on Minerva.

Attending a ceremony with an Ordinary classification means you can’t resit for an honours degree later.

If you have a pending appeal

From July 2026 onwards, you can attend your planned ceremony with an unresolved appeal. You’ll graduate with the award and classification in your final results, and a revised certificate and transcript will be issued if either changes after the appeal.

Alternatively, you can choose to defer graduation attendance until the next ceremonies after your appeal is resolved. If your award or classification changes, the revised award will be presented at that ceremony.

Degree certificates are not always presented at ceremonies, your certificate may be issued separately.

You no longer need to wait for your appeal outcome before choosing to attend graduation or defer.
