Correcting an error on your visa

Sometimes visas granted by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) contain mistakes. It is important to check your visa carefully and report any errors so they can be corrected.

If you have a question about visa errors that is not covered in the following information, or if you need any support in reporting an error, email the Student Visa Advice team at studentvisaadvice@leeds.ac.uk with your student ID number.

Check your visa

Personal details

Make sure that the following details on your visa are all correct with no spelling errors. Check they match the details given on your passport:

  • name
  • date of birth
  • place of birth
  • nationality
  • gender
  • photograph

Length of permission

Your Student visa should cover the full length of your course as stated on your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS), plus additional time before and after your course. Check to see how long your visa should be valid for:

If your course is 12 months or longer:

  • Visa start date: up to one month before course start date.
  • Visa valid until: four months after course end date.

If your course is six months or longer but shorter than 12 months:

  • Visa start date: up to one month before course start date.
  • Visa valid until: two months after course end date.

If your course is shorter than six months and is not a pre-sessional course:

  • Visa start date: up to seven days before course start date.
  • Visa valid until: seven days after course end date.

If your course is a pre-sessional course shorter than six months:

  • Visa start date: up to one month before course start date.
  • Visa valid until: one month after course end date.

If your  Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) expired on 31 December 2024

If your BRP expired on 31 December 2024 but your visa is valid for longer, this is not an error. From 1 January 2025 you need to prove your immigration status online with an eVisa instead of using a BRP. Find more information about the change from BRPs to eVisas.

Work conditions

You can check your work conditions online using the prove your right to work service.

The University of Leeds is a Student sponsor with a track record of compliance. This means that if you are studying a full-time course with a Student visa sponsored by the University of Leeds, your visa should confirm that you can work:

  • Up to 20 hours per week during term-time if you are studying for a qualification at degree level or above. Degree level means that the course level stated on your CAS is RQF level 6 or higher.
  • Up to 10 hours per week during term-time if you are studying for a qualification below degree level study. This includes pre-sessional courses.

No employment is permitted if you are studying a part-time course.

Sponsor licence number

If you have applied for a Student visa from outside of the UK, the University of Leeds sponsor licence number H3GNC03A4 should be listed on the entry vignette in your passport. If it is not, your visa needs to be corrected.

Visa category

If you have applied for a Student visa, your visa must say that the status is ‘Student’ or ‘Tier 4 General’.

If your visa says that your status is ‘Child Student’, ‘Tier 4 Child’ or something else, this is an error which must be corrected. Please email the Student Visa Advice team at studentvisaadvice@leeds.ac.uk for further assistance.

Correcting an error on an eVisa

If you have an eVisa, you can check your online immigration status online using the view and prove service. The conditions attached to your permission will be confirmed in the email from UKVI when your visa was granted.

Report an error with your eVisa if you applied for your visa outside the UK

If you applied for your visa from outside the UK you must report any errors to UKVI using their online eVisa error reporting form.

Report an error with your eVisa if you applied to switch to or extend your visa inside the UK

If you applied for your visa from inside the UK and there are mistakes in the length of your visa or its conditions, you must submit an application for administrative review within 14 calendar days of receiving the decision. There is an £80 fee for this application which will be refunded to you if a mistake has been made.

If there are any other errors with your eVisa, report the errors to UKVI using their online eVisa error reporting form.

Correcting an error on an entry vignette (visa sticker)

Errors noticed before travelling to the UK

If there is a mistake on the entry vignette sticker in your passport you contact your visa application centre immediately to request a correction.

If your visa start date is after your intended travel date, you must get this corrected before you travel to the UK. You cannot travel to the UK before the start date of your visa.

Errors noticed after arrival in the UK

If there is an error on your vignette and you only notice it after you have successfully arrived in the UK, please email the Student Visa Advice team at studentvisaadvice@leeds.ac.uk for help with getting the error corrected.

Correcting an error on a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP)

BRPs have been replaced by eVisas (an online record of your immigration status). You cannot get a replacement BRP.

If there are any problems with your BRP, you will need to get access to your eVisa and, if the details on your eVisa are not correct, report the error with your eVisa.

After you have received a visa correction

When you receive your new visa, email a new share code for your eVisa or a copy of your amended vignette to the visa expiry team at visa_expiry@leeds.ac.uk. Please include your student ID number with your email.
