Correcting an error on your visa
Sometimes visas granted by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) contain mistakes. It is important to check your eVisa carefully and report any errors so they can be corrected.
If you have a question about visa errors that is not covered in the following information, or if you need any support in reporting an error, email the Student Visa Advice team at studentvisaadvice@leeds.ac.uk with your student ID number.
Check your eVisa
If you have an eVisa, you can check your online immigration status online using the UK Government’s view and prove service. The conditions attached to your visa will also be confirmed in the email UKVI sent you to tell you that your application was successful. You must report any errors to UKVI so that they can be corrected.
Personal details
Make sure that the following details on your eVisa are all correct with no spelling errors. Check they match the details given on your passport:
- name
- date of birth
- place of birth
- nationality
- gender
- photograph
Length of visa
Your Student visa should cover the full length of your course as stated on your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS), plus additional time before and after your course. Check to see how long your visa should be valid for:
If your course is 12 months or longer:
- Visa start date: up to one month before course start date.
- Visa valid until: four months after course end date.
If your course is six months or longer but shorter than 12 months:
- Visa start date: up to one month before course start date.
- Visa valid until: two months after course end date.
If your course is shorter than six months and is not a pre-sessional course:
- Visa start date: up to seven days before course start date.
- Visa valid until: seven days after course end date.
If your course is a pre-sessional course shorter than six months:
- Visa start date: up to one month before course start date.
- Visa valid until: one month after course end date.
If your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) expired on 31 December 2024
If your BRP expired on 31 December 2024 but your visa is valid for longer, this is not an error. From 1 January 2025 you need to prove your immigration status online with an eVisa instead of using a BRP. Find more information about the change from BRPs to eVisas.
Work conditions
You can check your work conditions online using the prove your right to work service.
The University of Leeds is a Student sponsor with a track record of compliance. This means that if you are studying a full-time course with a Student visa sponsored by the University of Leeds, your visa should confirm that you can work:
- Up to 20 hours per week during term-time if you are studying for a qualification at degree level or above. Degree level means that the course level stated on your CAS is RQF level 6 or higher.
- Up to 10 hours per week during term-time if you are studying for a qualification below degree level study. This includes pre-sessional courses.
No employment is permitted if you are studying a part-time course.

Sponsor licence number
If you applied for a Student visa using a CAS issued by the University of Leeds, the University of Leeds sponsor licence number H3GNC03A4 should be listed on the eVisa. If your eVisa has a different licence number, it needs to be corrected.
Visa category
If you applied for a Student visa, your visa must say that the status is ‘Student’, ‘Student Route’ or ‘Tier 4 General’.
If your visa says that your status is ‘Child Student’, ‘Tier 4 Child’ or something else, this is an error which must be corrected. Please email the Student Visa Advice team at studentvisaadvice@leeds.ac.uk for further assistance.
