What to do if your passport or BRP is lost or stolen
Find out what to do if your passport or Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) are lost or stolen.
Passports
Passports lost or stolen in the UK
If your passport was lost or stolen in the UK:
- Report the loss or theft of your passport to the police as soon as possible and get a reference number.
- Apply to your embassy in the UK, or your nearest embassy, for a replacement passport.
- If you have an eVisa, then you will need to link your new passport to your UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account once you receive it. Learn more about eVisas.
- If your UK visa was in the form of an entry vignette in your lost passport and covered the full length of your stay in UK (this will be the case if your course is shorter than six months and you don’t have an eVisa), you may need to apply to replace your vignette with an eVisa.
Passports lost or stolen outside the UK
If your passport was lost or stolen outside the UK:
- Report the loss or theft of your passport to the local police and get a reference number.
- Apply for a replacement passport at the nearest embassy for your country.
- If you have an eVisa, then you will need to link your new passport to your UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account. You should do this before you travel back to the UK. Learn more about eVisas.
- If your UK visa was in the form of an entry vignette in your lost passport, you are not able to get access to an eVisa, then you may need to apply to transfer your visa to a new passport before you can come back to the UK.
- Don't book flights or attempt to travel until you have your new passport.
Biometric Residence Permits (BRP)
If your BRP is lost or stolen, you must report this to UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) by completing the online form on the UKVI website. You can be fined up to £1,000 and made to leave the UK if you do not report a lost or stolen BRP.
If you can access your eVisa, you will be able to use this to travel back to the UK.
UKVI stopped issuing new BRPs on 31 October 2024 as part of the UK’s transition to a digital immigration system. This means you cannot apply for a replacement BRP.
You will still be able to use your eVisa and UKVI account to demonstrate your immigration status instead of the BRP. Learn more about eVisas.
