Delayed student loan payments

You will usually receive your Student Loan at the start of your course as specified in your payment schedule from the Student Loans Company.

Complete the following steps before contacting Student Finance England if your student loan payment is delayed:

Check you have completed registration

To receive your first student loan instalment you must be registered with the University.

If you’re a first-year student you must also have your identity checked on campus.

We will confirm your registration with the Student Loans Company electronically once your registration and identity check are complete.

We do not require a scan of your student loan notification letter.

Check your supporting evidence

Log into your student finance account and view your evidence screen to check if any of your supporting evidence is still outstanding.

If you have submitted all of your supporting evidence but your account says there is evidence outstanding, email the Student Funding team at funding@leeds.ac.uk and they will investigate.

You'll need to be present when we call them or set up a password with Student Finance England so that we can do it in your absence.

Check the university information on your application

If you originally planned to study at another university, Student Finance England might be expecting you to register at a different university.

Contact them directly to resolve this issue.

If it is still unclear why your loan is delayed, call Student Finance England on 0300 100 0607.

Interim funding options

When you know the reason and length of the delay it will help you plan interim funding options. These might include:

  • Asking friends and family for short-term financial help
  • Using an interest-free bank overdraft
  • Contacting the Funding team particularly if you have exhausted other options and need money to cover essential food and travel to the University.
