Mental health and counselling services outside the University

As well as the mental health support from the University, you could access the following mental health, counselling and wellbeing services in Leeds.

This list is not exhaustive and we recommend that you talk to your GP if you have concerns about your physical or emotional wellbeing.

ADHD and autism services

Student Counselling and Wellbeing does not provide medical diagnoses. Please speak to your GP or contact the following NHS services for support with diagnosing ADHD and autism.

Leeds Adult ADHD Service

Leeds Adult ADHD Service provides specialist assessment and management of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). It works with adults and young people in transition from the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS).

Leeds Autism Diagnostic Service

Leeds Autism Diagnostic Service (LADS) provides assessment and diagnosis of people of all intellectual ability, who may have autism. 

Assessment is by a team of mental health and learning disability professionals. The team has specialist autism knowledge. LADS accepts referrals from healthcare professionals. You can also self refer if you would like an autism assessment. 

Addiction support

Forward Leeds

Forward Leeds supports adults, young people and families who need help with alcohol and drug use in Leeds.

Leeds Community Gambling Service

Leeds Community Gambling Service offers free and confidential support. Services are open to gamblers and anyone affected by someone else’s gambling behaviour. 

Rehab 4 Addiction

Rehab 4 Addiction offers residential rehabilitation services in the Leeds area. It runs mixed sex rehabilitation centres for patients between the ages of 16 to 65. 

Bereavement support

Cruse Bereavement Support

Cruse Bereavement Support is for anyone affected by bereavement. It provides free, confidential emotional support including face-to-face, telephone, email and web chat support.  

Leeds Mind Suicide Bereavement Services

Leeds Mind Suicide Bereavement Services is a safe space to talk and get practical guidance, including individual and group work support, for anyone bereaved by suicide.

Drop-in and crisis services

Dial House

Dial House is an out-of-hours Leeds service for people in times of crisis. Visitors can relax and have an hour of one-to-one support from crisis support workers. 

Dial House @ Touchstone

Dial House @ Touchstone offers culturally sensitive, out-of-hours mental health crisis support. The staff team is of diverse heritage and works in a trauma-informed and survivor-led way. 

Here For You

Here For You is an out-of-hours service offering face-to-face support for anyone feeling down or struggling to cope with their thoughts.

The Market Place

The Market Place is a free and confidential drop-in centre for young people in Leeds City Centre. It offers advice, counselling and telephone support with a range of common issues. 

Eating disorder support

CONNECT Yorkshire

CONNECT is a community and inpatient service. It provides treatment for adults with eating disorders across West Yorkshire. 

FREED

FREED provides early eating disorder intervention for people aged 16 to 25. The website gives useful resources around disordered eating. There are articles and a self-assessment quiz to assess eating patterns. 

Helplines

Connect

Connect is a phone and online support helpline for people living in Leeds. The service provides emotional support and information for people in distress.

Nightline

Nightline is a confidential and anonymous telephone and instant messaging service for students.

Every night of term, student volunteers answer calls, texts, instant messages and talk in person with their fellow university students about anything that is troubling them.

Samaritans

Samaritans are available to respond to calls and emails 24/7 about anything that is troubling you, no matter how large or small the issue feels.

West Yorkshire Mental Health Support Line

West Yorkshire Mental Health Support Line provides confidential support, advice and information for anyone who is concerned about their mental health, or is worried about a family member or someone they care for.

The service is for anyone aged 18 and over who is registered with a Leeds GP.

Mental health and wellbeing services

Andy’s Man Club

Andy’s Man Club is a men’s suicide prevention charity offering free peer-to-peer support groups for men aged over 18. There is no requirement to have a mental health condition or issue to attend – all men are welcome. Find your nearest group online.

Archway

Archway delivers a range of free services and activities for young people aged 16 to 25. This includes counselling, drop-in services, employment support and other holistic services.

Carers Leeds

Carers Leeds provides support to all unpaid carers in Leeds including individuals caring for a friend or family member due to their illness, disability, mental health condition or substance misuse problem.

Leeds Mental Wellbeing Service

Leeds Mental Wellbeing Service (LMWS) provides psychological interventions and talking therapy.

It offers treatments for common psychological difficulties such as anxiety, depression, panic or help in response to life events which may affect your capacity to cope.

There are a variety of treatments available including online, group and individual treatments.

Live Well Leeds

Live Well Leeds deliver a range of services that include one-to-one support, group support, peer support, befriending and volunteering opportunities.

All services are based around recovery, maintaining wellbeing and social inclusion.

Leeds Recovery College

Access courses to learn more about mental health and/or improve your general wellbeing.

You don’t need a referral, diagnosis or any formal contact with mental health services to access Leeds Recovery College.

MindWell

MindWell is an NHS funded resource that offers mental health information for everyone in Leeds.

They provide information regarding commonly experienced problems such as anxiety, depression, sleep, worry or challenging life events such as bereavement.

They also provide self-help tools and details of where to find support in Leeds.

Northpoint

Northpoint provides therapy and emotional wellbeing support across Leeds and West Yorkshire.

This includes in-house GP mental health advisors, one-to-one therapy and psychoeducational support.

Our Way Leeds

Our Way Leeds (OWL) supports young people aged 16 to 25 at risk of homelessness and provides advice, accommodation and resettlement support. 

Shantona Women’s and Family Centre

Shantona supports communities and provides support with mental health, disability, immigration status or asylum status, domestic and sexual violence, housing and other issues.

Solace

Solace provides mental health and wellbeing support for refugees and asylum seekers aged over 17.

Private counselling and psychotherapy

There are a number of private counselling and psychotherapy professionals in Leeds. Fees will vary per practitioner. We cannot recommend specific therapists.

Black Health Initiative

Black Health Initiative provides a free and confidential counselling service to African, African Caribbean, dual heritage and other minority ethnic adults and young people aged 13 and over.

Their qualified counsellors and psychotherapists are culturally competent and have expertise in dealing with culturally related issues.

Phoenix Health and Wellbeing

Phoenix Health and Wellbeing offers a subsidised counselling service for people with chronic mental, physical and emotional health issues and low incomes.

Relate Bradford and Leeds

Relate provides a range of personal and relationship counselling services for people in Bradford and Leeds.

Women’s Counselling and Therapy Service

Women’s Counselling and Therapy Service offers free or low-cost counselling and psychotherapy for women and girls on low incomes.

Sexual health and identity support

Leeds Gender Identity Service

Leeds Gender Identity Service offers assessment and support to people aged 17 and above with gender dysphoria. 

Leeds Psychosexual Medicine Service

Leeds Psychosexual Medicine (PSM) Service provides specialist assessment and treatment for sexual dysfunction.

The team offers therapy to individuals and couples aged 18 years and over. Treatment uses different therapeutic approaches tailored to the individual.

Leeds Skyline

Leeds Skyline has support services for anyone living with or affected by HIV, including:

  • one-to-one emotional support
  • cognitive behavioural therapy
  • information and advice on issues including treatment
  • Information on benefits, housing and finances.

The team runs:

  • structured and peer support groups
  • training and workshops
  • mental health support
  • complementary therapies.

Yorkshire MESMAC

Yorkshire MESMAC provides sexual health services to communities across Yorkshire.

The team supports communities including: 

  • men who have sex with men 
  • ethnic minorities 
  • people misusing drugs 
  • sex workers  
  • LGBT+ young people and adults.

Trauma support

Basis Yorkshire

Basis supports sex workers living and/or working in Leeds and women or young people experiencing sexual abuse or exploitation.

Behind Closed Doors

Behind Closed Doors offers help and support tailored to each family or individual’s need.

Their services are confidential and available to everyone living in Leeds who has experienced domestic abuse, regardless of gender, age, race or sexual orientation.

Hazlehurst Centre

The Hazlehurst Centre offers free support and practical help in West Yorkshire. Anyone who has experienced sexual violence/sexual abuse can access: 

  • support and guidance
  • a medical assessment/treatment
  • a forensic examination
  • the opportunity for aftercare referrals to support services.

Leeds Domestic Violence Service

Leeds Domestic Violence Service provides a range of community-based services including temporary supported housing, independent domestic violence advocate (IDVA) support, community outreach support, a 24-hour telephone helpline, drop-in and support groups.

Support After Rape and Sexual Violence Leeds

Support After Rape and Sexual Violence Leeds (SARSVL) offers specialist counselling for women and girls who have experienced sexual violence.

The service offers one-to-one and group counselling in a women-only space. SARSVL is approved by Rape Crisis

Survivors West Yorkshire

Survivors West Yorkshire and male-focused Ben’s Place provide trauma-informed and co survivor-led counselling.

The specialist sexual violence and abuse support services work with male and female survivors.

West Yorkshire Victim Support

West Yorkshire Victim Support provides a free, confidential victim-centred service which is open to anyone affected by crime, regardless of whether or not they have reported the crime to the police.

Women’s Lives Leeds

Women’s Lives Leeds is a partnership of 12 women and girls organisations from across Leeds. The organisations have specialisms in:

  • domestic violence
  • mental health
  • sexual health
  • sex work
  • substance use
  • child sexual exploitation
  • education.
