Application process

Applications will not be processed on a first-come, first-served basis.

If you are studying for a language degree and are required to complete a compulsory year abroad in 2026/27, please see your application process on the Language, Cultures and Societies Residence Abroad SharePoint site.

To submit a complete study abroad application, you must complete the following steps:

  1. Attend the 'Study Abroad Year: What You Need to Know' session as part of Global Opportunities Week (or watch the recording). Global Opportunities Week will take place from 20 to 25 October 2025. All events and recordings will be available on the Global Opportunities SharePoint site
  2. Check your eligibility.
  3. Find out your cohort ranking.
  4. Check the popularity index and compare this with your cohort ranking.
  5. Conduct thorough research.
  6. Speak to your School Study Abroad Coordinator about your university choices.
  7. Complete the online application form and upload your supporting documents.

A detailed explanation of the application process and all necessary tools can be found in the 'Year Abroad' section of the Global Opportunities SharePoint site

Please make sure all steps are completed by the deadline of 4pm on Monday 17 November 2025. Incomplete applications will not be considered in the first round of selections.

Selection results

The Outgoing Study Abroad team will email you about the outcome of your application by the end of January 2026.

Once the selection process has concluded, your allocation to a particular institution cannot be changed. Due to the complex nature of the selection process and the popularity of the study abroad programme, placements cannot be altered without demonstrating exceptional circumstances in writing.

If you were eligible to apply but were not successful, you will be invited to reapply. Not securing a placement is usually due to the competitiveness of the destinations listed on your application.

If you fall into this category, the Outgoing Study Abroad team will email you with a list of available destinations, invite you to submit a second application and the deadlines for submitting your new preferences.
