Your next steps checklist

There are some steps you need to complete as you move from your foundation year to your undergraduate degree.

Use this checklist to guide you through everything you need to do between April and Welcome Week to prepare you for your next step.

Progressing to your new course

Your course status on Minerva will change from ‘foundation year’ to ‘undergraduate’ over the summer/early in September, depending on when your progression is confirmed. If you need to complete any July or August resits, your course will continue to display as a foundation year until your results are confirmed.

You will be sent an email when your progression has been processed, which will contain further information. Your new school will then contact you with welcome information.

Tasks for April–May

Make sure that your finances are in order for the new academic year.

1. Financial support

Reapply for all financial support, including tuition fees and maintenance loans, disabled students allowance (DSA) and any other support you receive.

2. Sponsorship

If your fees are being met by a sponsor, such as your employer, ensure the Student Finance (Fees) team have a letter from them, on headed paper, confirming this as soon as possible. We need to have a letter from them each year. You cannot register until we have this.

3. More funding

Consider if you are eligible for any extra funding or grants.

Tasks for June–July

Understand your new course, know where to go for support, and develop your study skills to prepare for your next academic year.

1. Term dates

Check the term dates for the upcoming academic year and note them in your calendar.

2. Your new course

Find your new course on the Module and Programme Catalogue and familiarise yourself with the course content and structure so you know what to expect.

3. Reading materials and equipment

If advised by your new academic school, complete any preparatory reading over the summer and get any required texts or materials you may need for your first semester.

You can find your reading lists on the undergraduate module catalogue.

4. Reflection and skills building

Reflect on your achievements and the skills you’ve developed during your foundation year. Use our guidance on reflecting on and developing your skills to help you.

5. Plus Programme

All Foundation Year students who are UK fee payers are eligible to join the Plus Programme at any point during their studies at Leeds. Explore how it can help you and how you can get involved in their community to find support as you progress to your undergraduate degree.

Tasks for August–September

Complete the last few steps to be ready for the start of the academic year.

1. Registration

Once you have received notification that your record has been updated with your new course, you'll be able to register as a student for the 2026/27 academic year. Registration opens from 1 August onwards, and you need to re-register at the start of every academic year.

2. Module enrolment

All students

Once your progression has been confirmed and your course has been changed on University systems, you will be eligible to enrol on your modules from 1 September. Your new school will provide further information on how to enrol and any deadlines you need to be aware of.

If you have any issues with module enrolment, contact your new school.

Leeds University Business School students

If you’re moving to Leeds University Business School (LUBS), you may be able to enrol on your modules slightly earlier. LUBS will be in contact with you to share any module enrolment arrangements you should be aware of. If you need any further help, email the LUBS programme support team at LUBSprogrammesupport@leeds.ac.uk.

3. Scholarships

If you applied for any University undergraduate scholarships, look out for any communications from the Scholarships team sharing the outcome of your application in late August/early September.

4. Leeds Bursary

Full-time Foundation Year students

If you received the Leeds Bursary during your foundation year and you are moving onto a full-time course, you will be automatically reassessed at the start of the new academic year. Until then, your Leeds Bursary status will show as ‘not eligible’ on Minerva. You can expect to receive communication during the first few weeks of term. Check your Leeds Bursary status.

Part-time Foundation Year students

If you are moving onto another part-time degree, you need to reapply for the Leeds Bursary. If you are moving onto a full-time degree, you will be automatically assessed for the Leeds Bursary in the first few weeks of term and the Fees and Funding team will contact you directly with further information.

Tasks for September–October

Make the most of the start of the semester and settle into your studies.

1. Welcome Week

Get involved in welcome activities and events across campus to help you settle into your studies and make new connections.

2. Settle into your course

Your first few weeks are all about adjusting to your new course and pace of work. Read our advice on adapting to your course to help you settle in.

3. Meet your academic personal tutor (APT)

In the first few weeks of term, your school will give you guidance on how to meet with your Academic Personal Tutor (APT). Make sure you meet with them in your first few weeks to discuss any support you might need from them and learn more about how they can help you.
