Intercultural Ambassadors programme About the programme
The Intercultural Ambassadors volunteering programme is a great way to connect with other students and members of the local community by running projects designed to bring people together.
It will give you valuable experiences you can use when applying for jobs or future study.
Benefits of the programme
As an ambassador, you’ll run one of 10 projects that make a positive impact on students at Leeds and/or people in the Leeds community. It can be a life-changing experience. You get out what you put in, so make the most of it!
During the programme, you will:
- develop your cultural awareness by learning from people from different cultural backgrounds
- develop your employability skills
- develop your project management skills, including working to a brief, project planning, working with stakeholders, budget and risk management, and impact evaluation
- gain valuable experience of multicultural teamwork
- get to know some amazing people and have fun
Projects
Some projects involve working with the local community outside campus and some involve running activities for students on campus, including activities that will be part of Leeds University Union’s World Unite Festival. See examples of previous Intercultural Ambassadors projects.
We will ask you to give us your project preferences. You will rate each project from one to 10. We will create 10 groups and decide who works on which project by considering what you have told us on your application, what your strengths and interests are, and how you work and interact with others.
You may not get your preferred project choice, depending on demand, but we will offer you a great project giving you the opportunity to inspire, connect and grow.
Support during the programme
Mentoring
During the programme, you will receive support from a staff mentor who will help you and your team deliver your allocated project.
Training sessions and socials
You will receive training to help you deliver your project and develop your intercultural skills. You will be able to put what you have learned directly into practice while you’re on the programme.
The training sessions cover:
- project management
- teamwork
- cultural awareness
- event management
- effective communication skills.
After the training sessions, there will be socials that you can join to connect with other ambassadors in an informal way.
Time commitment
The programme runs each year from November to early May.
If your application is successful, you must attend all training sessions and commit at least two to four hours a week to work on your project. This could include independent work, group work, meeting with your project mentor and completing preparation tasks.
