Help if you’ve been scammed

What to do if you think you’ve been targeted by a scam, phishing or fraud.

Scams and fraud can be hard to spot, and it’s completely normal to feel unsure or overwhelmed if you think you’ve been affected.

The most important thing is to stay calm and take action. Support is available, and you’re not alone.

Take action fast

The sooner you respond, the easier it is to take control and get the help you need.

When to contact your bank

You should contact your bank directly if you’ve:

  • sent money to someone you now suspect is a scammer
  • shared your bank details or card information
  • noticed suspicious transactions.

Your bank may be able to:

  • stop payments
  • secure your account
  • advise you on next steps.

When to contact the police

Contact the Police online or call 101 if you’ve lost money due to a scam.

You can also report the incident to the national fraud and cyber-crime reporting centre, Action Fraud.

If you’re in immediate danger, being threatened, blackmailed, or coerced, immediately call 999.

When to contact the University’s IT Service Desk

You should contact the IT Service Desk if you have:

  • clicked on a suspicious link
  • opened a strange attachment.

The faster you respond — by disconnecting from the internet, reporting the incident, and changing passwords — the greater chance you have of limiting damage and preventing things from getting worse.

The IT Service Desk Team can:

  • help check your device for malware
  • support you in protecting your University accounts
  • advise on reporting phishing emails.

Contact the University IT Service Desk team.
