The influence of power and the risk of conflict are evident in all forms of human interaction. They influence the choices and actions of people, institutions, governments and organisations.

The terms power and conflict might refer to different practices, phenomena or patterns, depending on whether you are studying business, economics, social sciences or the humanities. And these may operate at different scales, from the global to the local, between institutions and individuals. What unites these scholarly approaches is a desire to locate where power is held, understand how it is maintained, and analyse how struggles over power may result in inequalities, injustices, and conflict – or greater equality, justice-seeking and peace-building.

Depending on your interest area, you can pick from a wide range of modules, perhaps finding modules in schools and faculties that surprise you. Learn about how power and conflict in the home and between individuals is shaped by culture, justice systems, and religious teachings.

This sub-theme challenges the assumption that conflict can ever be considered truly private. Conflict in the home, local community or workplace generally reflects patterns of power that go beyond the interpersonal relationship where the conflict is found.

The study of personal and interpersonal power and conflict involves unpacking and questioning family relationships, gender norms and myths, workplace interaction, and religious practices and scriptures. Studying power and conflict between individuals throws a light onto where power resides in society, how it operates, and how institutions support and reproduce power in intimate and interpersonal relationships.

Art and culture is not just an aesthetic endeavour, but these forms of expression have been used across history and countries as tools to both uphold and challenge power. Dance, literature, film and artistic works can serve to parody power and public figures, ridicule out-dated practices, highlight the suffering of others, or propose new ways of living or doing politics.

Modules in this sub-theme also allow you to trace historical events through cultural commentary, and how cultures have evolved over time to reflect changing social, economic and political contexts. Studying culture of art and performance can help to locate different viewpoints, discord and unrest, as well as to open up our thinking to unfamiliar concepts and ideas.

From political theories of violence to sociological theories of culture, from theorising caste and race to definitions of disability, this sub-theme prompts you to think critically about the terms we use, the assumptions we base our analysis on, and the ways in which the world could be different.

Modules range from in-depth explorations of historical thinkers and their legacies today, to those that apply theories to case studies, providing you with the opportunity to see how theory helps us to understand the world around us, and how the reality of the world informs the development of theory.
