Leeds for Life Foundation: Research Awards

Research Awards aim to enhance research skills and subject knowledge by funding small, independent research projects carried out during a study abroad year. The award allows you to make use of resources in your host country (for example in libraries or by local data collection), perhaps helping you prepare for a final year project or dissertation.

Any University of Leeds undergraduate student with a place on the study abroad programme can apply for a Leeds for Life Foundation Grant to fund a research project. You can apply for a Research Award at any stage between your initial selection for a place on the study abroad programme and the end of your study abroad year. There are two calls for projects each year, at the beginning of term 1 and term 2. The Foundation is funded by the Alumni Footsteps Group and the Santander Group.

More information on the application process and application guidance can be found on the Leeds for Life Foundation website.

Keeping an existing University of Leeds scholarship

If you already receive a scholarship to study at the University of Leeds you may be able to keep this funding during your studies overseas. Discuss this with your scholarship administrator as early as possible, so they can make arrangements before you leave the UK.

Scholarships awarded by external organisations

BUTEX scholarships

British Universities Transatlantic Exchange Association (BUTEX) awards eight scholarships of £500 to UK students studying outside Europe. To apply you must have been offered a study abroad placement by the Study Abroad Office. Leeds students have been successful in the past, so it is definitely worth applying.

Singapore and South Korea: DUO scholarships

DUO awards are intended to promote student mobility. Students form an exchange pair with a student from a partner university in Singapore or South Korea, so there must be an equal number of applicants from Leeds and the partner institution for every student to apply. Successful ‘duos’ will be awarded a maximum of 4,000 euros each. The scholarships are awarded on merit.

If you are eligible to apply, the Study Abroad office will send details of application forms and more information when this becomes available, usually in the March/April before departure.

Mexican Government Scholarship Program

Exchange students  who are going to study in Mexico can choose to apply for the Mexican Government Scholarship Program. Further information and details on how to apply can be found on the Mexican Embassy website.
