Your family and work

If you have family members staying with you in Leeds while you study, they may wish to find work to supplement your household income.

There are strict rules governing who is eligible to work in the UK, and it is important to understand these rules and make sure you and your dependants comply with them before accepting any offer of employment.

General working conditions

If your dependant has permission to work in the UK, they'll be able to work full-time or part-time, in employment, in self-employment or voluntarily. The only restriction is that they won't be allowed to work as a doctor in training.

If your dependant doesn't have permission to work in the UK, they won't be able to work in any capacity, whether in paid employment or voluntary work.

If you are planning to make a new Tier 4 (General) application, or if you applied after 3rd March 2010

If you were granted immigration permission for 12 months or more, your dependant will be able to work in the UK, as their visa will expire at the same time as yours.

If your dependant has been granted immigration permission for less than 12 months, they won't be allowed to work in the UK.

If you're currently in the UK and you need to make a new Tier 4 application which will result in you being granted less than 12 months leave to remain, your dependant won't be allowed to work in the UK.
