Travelling internationally while COVID-19 restrictions apply
We know that COVID-19 and travel restrictions have made international travel more difficult for members of our community who live outside the UK.
This page was last reviewed on 12 April 2022.
You may be making difficult decisions about whether you can or should travel outside the UK during your studies. This page provides information and support if you are considering travelling out of the UK during University vacations for personal or leisure reasons, and then returning to Leeds.
CHECK THE LATEST UK GOVERNMENT GUIDANCE ON INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL AND RETURNING TO ENGLAND
Following the latest Government rules on Entering the UK from abroad published on 18 March, there are currently no Covid-19 restrictions for entering the UK from any country. As the situation can change rapidly, it’s still important you check the Entering the UK from abroad page frequently to make sure you have the most up-to-date advice.
HEALTH ADVICE FOR TRAVELLERS AT HIGHER RISK
The government’s website has useful guidance for travellers with pre-existing medical conditions. The National Travel Health Network and Centre (NaTHNaC) website also provides general advice on preventing the spread of COVID-19 while travelling.
EXTRA TRAVEL COSTS
If you’re travelling to a country which requires you to take a COVID-19 test and/or to quarantine, consider the costs of arranging this before you leave.
We understand that some students may need to cover unexpected costs in order to travel for welfare reasons. If these costs are causing you financial pressure, contact LUU Help and Support for advice about sources of financial assistance.
For useful contacts in case of emergencies and any other type of support you might need, see the Helpful Support Contact page.
PREPARING TO TRAVEL TO YOUR DESTINATION OUTSIDE THE UK
Follow these simple steps to make sure you’re prepared for your travels:
- Read more about any rules and restrictions in place in the country you are travelling to before you go so you have time to prepare correctly.
The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) website gives information on any restrictions in place in other countries. For example, you could be asked to show evidence of a negative COVID-19 test before travel or you may need to self-isolate in that country on arrival.
If you need to take a private test before you travel, the Government website can help you find and choose a private Coronavirus test provider.
- Check if your travel provider (airline, ferry, coach or train company) has any additional requirements. For example, they could ask you to provide additional documentation before travel or have specific rules for all passengers to follow.
- Research if there are any restrictions related to travel insurance. Check the Foreign Travel Insurance page for more information on this.
