Subsidised summer schools

University of Leeds students have opportunities to attend subsidised short programmes in Europe, Asia and Latin America. Please note these opportunities are not fully funded, they are partially subsidised.

Applications for subsidised summer 2020 opportunities are now closed.

The Study Abroad organisation on Minerva is one of your most important resources when checking your eligibility to apply and researching your options. Here you will also find details of our 101 sessions, which are compulsory for all students who apply for a subsidised short programme. Please note that to benefit from one of these subsidised places, you must apply through the Study Abroad Office at the University of Leeds. A link to the online application form is available on the Study Abroad Office organisation on Minerva. How to enrol: 

1. Log into Minerva via this specific link, which will take you to our 'Welcome to the Study Abroad organisation' page.

2. Follow the brief enrolment instructions provided on that page.

3. The organisation will then be listed under 'Organisations', which you can view by clicking on the 'Learn' tab.

Please note if you are successful in securing a place on a subsidised summer school your placement is subject to change or cancellation if the destination country is not safe to travel to at the time of the summer programme. Please check the University's Coronavirus (Covid-19) webpage regularly for updates, which also contains links to the latest government advice.

Programmes in Europe

    AU Summer University, Aarhus University, Denmark

    Aarhus University is among the top 100 universities in the world. The programme at AU Summer University consists of a broad variety of courses, taught in English within the fields of: Business Economics and Management, Communication, Culture and Society, Health, Law, Psychology, Science and Technology. For selected University of Leeds students the tuition fee will be waived.

    International Summer University Programme, Copenhagen Business School 

    Join ISUP, one of the Europe’s largest and oldest summer programmes, and experience the amazing spirit of wonderful Copenhagen and exciting courses taught by brilliant faculty. Be inspired by the international environment and other participants from over 50 countries. Priority for places will be given to students from LUBS. For selected University of Leeds students the tuition fee will be waived.

    Summer University DTU, Technical University of Denmark, Denmark 

    Summer University DTU is an opportunity for students to take courses over the summer in July or August for three weeks. Summer University DTU offers about 100 different courses. The courses can be found in the course database (search on 'Summer University' for details on courses in July, and August). At DTU, you are never more than 15 km away from Copenhagen - one of Europe’s most celebrated and progressive capitals, where modern 21st-century architecture blends effortlessly with the cobblestoned streets of the Middle Ages.

    Helsinki Summer School, University of Helsinki, Finland

    Helsinki Summer School offers courses that cover a wide range of academic fields and multidisciplinary topics. The courses are all taught in English and are designed to challenge and inspire you in a learning environment that promotes equality. Courses are offered in the following areas: Environmental, Food and Biological Sciences, Health Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences and Natural Sciences. A wide range of social events to help students get to know their colleagues and Finland better are included in the programme. For selected University of Leeds students the tuition fee will be waived.

    The course I studied was Cognition, Communication and the Brain, so as part of this we saw various techniques used for brain scanning and imaging.     German Language and Culture, Berlin School of Economics and Law, Germany

    Berlin School of Economics and Law is offering places for Leeds students on a tuition-waiver basis to take part in their international summer school. Participants in the summer school will follow an intensive three-week programme of German language at beginners or advanced beginners level only. The summer school also includes cultural activities and a social programme. Priority for places will be given to students who are not studying German language as part of a single or joint honours degree at Leeds and have been selected to spend a year studying abroad in a German speaking country next year.

    Bayreuth Summer University for Intercultural German Studies, Bayreuth University, Germany

    The Bayreuth Summer University offers intensive language courses (from beginners to advanced) which take place in the mornings. In the afternoon, the programme continues with communication courses or specialised courses (for intermediate level and above). For selected University of Leeds students the tuition fee will be waived. Priority for places will be given to students who are not studying German language as part of a single or joint honours degree at Leeds and have been selected to spend a year studying abroad in a German speaking country next year.

    Bayreuth International Summer School, Bayreuth University, Germany

    Choose one from six intensive courses which are offered as part of the summer school: Economics & Management, African Studies, Public Health & Environment, Energy & Climate, Polymer Science & Engineering and International Comparative Law. The courses are taught in English by international guest lecturers and for selected Leeds students the tuition fee will be waived (priority for places will be given to students from LUBS).

    INNOV@INSA Lyon, National Institute of Applied Sciences of Lyon, France

    This summer school is suitable for Science and Engineering students. You will study two modules on the summer school:

    1. French Language, Cross Cultural Communication, Industry and Society

    2. Management and Innovation in Europe

    Excursions and social activities includes day-trips to the Alps (Annecy and Mont-Blanc), a cooking class, dinner in a local restaurant, industrial and lab visits and orienteering in the city centre.

    Lifestyle & Leisure Programme, EDHEC Business School, France 

    Through this 3-week course, participants will examine a few mainstream players of the leisure economy, using models based in the region of Nice and Grasse as live case studies of the companies and consumers that inhabit the leisure economy. Three focus courses will combine background literature, in situ learning and a consultancy based evaluation framework to become acquainted with this emerging part of today’s economy. For selected University of Leeds students the tuition fee will be waived and priority for these places will be given to students from LUBS.

Programmes in Latin America

    UDLAP Summer Exchange Programme, Puebla, Mexico

    The Universidad de las Américas Puebla (UDLAP) is one of the most prestigious private universities in Mexico and is located in Cholula, Puebla, 100 kilometers southeast from Mexico City. Their four week Summer Exchange Programme is particularly suitable for intermediate or advanced Spanish learners with Spanish language and Mexican culture modules on offer. There are a very limited number of English-taught courses available. For selected University of Leeds students the programme fee will be waived which includes four weeks tuition, accommodation in dormitories and breakfast and lunch (Monday - Friday only).

    UDLAP Summer Exchange Programme, Puebla, Mexico Photo

    i Summer MX Programme - Tecnológico de Monterrey, Mexico

    Tecnológico de Monterrey is a private University in Mexico with 26 campuses across the country. It is ranked among the top 200 universities in the world and with a rating of five QS stars. The University runs several 'i Summer MX' programmes for students to choose from. Each programme has a different focus, they run for four weeks and will give you the chance to travel around Mexico whilst studying.

    Summer School on Brazilian Studies - Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Brazil

    The UFMG Summer School on Brazilian Studies intends to give students from all over the world an understanding of key aspects of Brazil from distinct perspectives. Over two weeks of intense learning, meetings will cover the underpinnings of Brazilian politics, history, foreign relations, geography, law, economy, arts and culture. Portuguese classes are also included. The Summer School takes place at UFMG’s main campus in Belo Horizonte – the capital city of Brazil’s federal state of Minas Gerais.  Field trips to places of historical and artistic relevance (Ouro Preto and Inhotim) are included in the programme.

Programmes in Asia

    Korea University International Summer Campus, Seoul, South Korea

    Spend six weeks studying at Korea University in Seoul, South Korea as part of their international summer campus (ISC). The ISC offers students the chance to put together their own programme of modules at a top Korean University, with a huge range of subjects taught in English available, including Korean culture, as well as the opportunity to study Korean language. Cultural activities and trips are included in the programme. For selected University of Leeds students the tuition fee will be waived.

    Hanyang International Summer School, Seoul, South Korea

    Hanyang International Summer School (Seoul, South Korea) balances academic courses with cultural immersion and students can have a unique experience of Korean culture. Build your own programme of courses from a wide range taught in English. Cultural activities and field trips are included in the programme such as a city tour, a boat cruise and the Boryeong Mud Festival. For selected University of Leeds students the tuition fee will be waived.

    Yonsei International Summer School, Seoul, South Korea 

    Yonsei International Summer School (YISS) opened its doors in 1985 and since then, YISS has become an integral part of campus life based on a unique blend of Korean and global cultures. YISS offers a wide range of courses taught in English, including the arts, culture, humanities, Asian and Korean studies, international politics and economics, global management, science and technology and environmental studies. For selected students the tuition fee will be waived.

    KAIST International Summer School, Daejeon, South Korea

    Based in Daejeon, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) is a research intensive university and is in the top 50 universities in the world. Since its establishment in 2007, KAIST International Summer School (KISS) has worked faithfully to serve as a hub for cultural and academic exchange between students from all over the world. You will choose two courses from a range taught in English and subjects include engineering, design, art and sciences. Beginners Korean is also available. For selected students the tuition fee will be waived.

    International Summer Semester, Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU), South Korea

    The International Summer Semester at SKKU is a unique academic program dedicated to sharing and experiencing the fascinating story of Seoul, Korea's 600-year-old capital. The program aims to develop students' global engagement by providing opportunities to share different perspectives on global issues, make friends from various cultural backgrounds, and explore Korea's history, culture, and society.     Summer Session in East Asian Studies and Japanese Language, Sophia University, Tokyo, Japan 

    This program provides participants with opportunities to take part in an East Asian studies programme and an intensive Japanese language programme. You will attend session one or session two of the summer school and will study English-taught subject based modules, Japanese language or a combination of the two. Subject based modules include business, history, culture, theatre, pop culture, sustainability and politics. For successful applicants, the tuition fee will be waived.

    Japanese Language Summer Course, Akita University, Japan

    The summer programme is a six-week, intensive Japanese language course. Participants can take elementary courses taught by experienced Japanese instructors to hone their Japanese language skills in a small class environment. For selected University of Leeds students the tuition fee will be waived. Akita International University is located in a rural area, ideal for experiencing traditional Japanese culture and rich natural beauty.
