Virtual graduation

If you’re graduating in July 2024 and are unable to attend graduation on campus, you can choose to celebrate your success in an interactive online ceremony instead.

A virtual graduation ceremony in progress.

Who is virtual graduation for?

Virtual graduation is an option for any students who are eligible to attend a graduation in July 2024. This online event offers you a chance to celebrate this important milestone, wherever you may be in the world. It’s particularly beneficial if you’ll be a graduate who isn’t able to travel to Leeds for July, or if you are busy with other commitments this summer. You will need to register your choice to attend a virtual graduation.

How does it work?

Just like the in-person ceremonies, each virtual ceremony will be streamed from the stage in the Great Hall building. Shortly before the day, you will receive a link to join the ceremony on Zoom, where you will be allocated to a specific breakout room with a small group of other graduates. As the names of each graduate are announced by the Presiding Officer of the virtual ceremony, you’ll appear on the screen alongside other graduates in your group - At this point, you can switch on your camera, celebrate and wave to any friends and family who may be viewing the graduation online.

When are the virtual graduation ceremonies?

This year, we are planning to hold the virtual graduation ceremonies on Monday 29 July 2024. Depending on the number of graduates registering to attend a virtual graduation, we may also offer virtual ceremonies on Tuesday 30 July 2024. You will be allocated a date and time for your ceremony after you have registered for this option, and will receive confirmation by email in June. Where possible, we aim to schedule the times of the virtual ceremonies for a variety of timezones, although depending on your location on the day the ceremony time may be early in the morning or late in the evening.

How long does the virtual ceremony last?

The virtual ceremonies usually last between 30 minutes and 1 hour.

Can my friends and family watch?

Absolutely! On the day, friends, family and others can watch the ceremony stream live or you can share the recording with them afterwards using the same link.

What should I wear?

You are welcome to wear any clothing of your choice. There is no requirement to wear official academic dress during a virtual graduation.

What else do I need to know?

On the day, a ‘virtual host’ will be online throughout the ceremony to answer any technical questions. If there are any details you’d like to check in advance of your graduation day, you can contact our team by email to graduation@leeds.ac.uk Please include your student ID number in any emails you send.
