A welcome message to all postgraduate researchers from the Dean of the Leeds Doctoral College
Welcome to the University of Leeds and to the beginning of your journey as a postgraduate researcher. You have joined a research-intensive university with influence across regional, national and international boundaries. Our research is increasingly making an impact on global society and we have fruitful two-way relationships across a spectrum of external organisations. We are committed to building and maintaining these relationships at institutional level (through entities such as NEXUS and the Cultural Institute) as well embedding such engagement within our disciplines.
You are an essential part of our passion for research and innovation. We are committed not just to the success of your research project, but also to your individual development, both as an effective and impactful researcher and as an ethical and responsible global citizen. Working towards a Leeds Doctorate places you within a vibrant community of researchers to share with and learn from, provides word-class professional training and development, disciplinary and inter-disciplinary supervision and collaboration, and support for your wellbeing, all within a context of support for you to engage with international researchers here and abroad. We are proud to celebrate the achievements of postgraduate researchers, for example at our annual Doctoral College Showcase.
Within the Doctoral College, each of the University's seven Faculties has a Graduate School. At disciplinary level, principal investigators and supervisors in your academic school or research unit work with School Directors of Postgraduate Research and the Heads of the Faculty Graduate Schools to ensure consistency as well as to deliver subject-specific support.
In order to adapt to a rapidly changing world we are always keen to hear from you on how to improve what we do, and to better match your changing needs. We provide regular opportunities for you to provide feedback to us, both directly and via our partnership work with Leeds University Union. Postgraduate researchers are represented on Graduate School Committees and on our University Graduate Board, to proactively strengthen discussions and decisions about future University policy for research degrees.
We look forward to working with you. As we gradually emerge from a global pandemic to face the other challenges of the 21st Century your intellectual focus and skills will be essential.
And whatever your current or future plans, we intend that a Leeds Doctorate should be a platform for your success.
