What documents you need for your ID check

An identity check, also known as a Right to Study check, is required for all students starting a new course of study at the University of Leeds.  

Please see the following information to determine what documents are required to complete your identity check/Right to Study check.  

All students must be in the UK to complete their identity check. If you are travelling to the UK for study please make sure you complete your identity check after you arrive in the UK. 

Contents

  6. Students studying for 6 months or less

1. Students from the UK and Ireland 

Passport – An image of your passport information page.  

If you do not have a passport and you have a loan approved with the Student Loans Company you can upload an image of a UK Driving Licence (provisional or full licence).   

If you do not have a passport and you are not receiving student finance from the Student Loans Company you will need to upload an image of your birth/adoption certificate with a completed Identification Verification form. You will receive the Identification Verification form and instructions via email after submitting the Identity Check form, if you have indicated that you do not have a passport and are not receiving a student loan. 

 

2. Students with European Settled or pre-settled status (EUSS) 

Passport or National ID card – An image of your passport information page or national ID card (front and back).  

Share Code – Obtain your share code by visiting the GOV.UK view and prove your immigration status site. Please make sure you choose ‘something else’ as the option when asked for the purpose of the check, this will ensure the share code is for Right to Study, not for Right to Work or Right to rent.   

 

3. Students with a Digital Student visa

You will receive a digital visa if you used the ‘UK Immigration: ID Check’ app to make your visa application. 

If you did not use the ‘UK Immigration: ID Check’ app to apply for your visa, or you are a resident of one of the countries on the UKVI Visa National list, you will receive a physical BRP. In this case please see one of the ‘Student Biometric Residence Permit (BRP)’ sections below.  

Passport – An image of your passport information page.  

Share Code – Obtain your share code by visiting the GOV.UK view and prove your immigration status site. Please make sure you choose ‘something else’ as the option when asked for the purpose of the check, this will ensure the share code is for Right to Study, not for Right to Work or Right to rent.   

Grant/Decision email – Upload an image of your grant/decision email issued to you by UKVI. This will contain your visa restrictions and sponsor details.  

Date of Entry into the UK* – Evidence of the date you entered the UK. For example, an entry stamp in your passport, boarding pass or plane ticket.  

*Please note that if you made an in-country application (you were already in the UK when you applied for your current student visa) we do not need to see evidence of your date of entry.  

 

4. Students with a Student Biometric Residence Permit (BRP): University of Leeds BRP Collection Location  
 

Check your BRP collection location – You can check your BRP collection location in the payment section of your online visa application. Or, if you applied for your visa outside of the UK, your BRP collection location may be on your UKVI decision letter.  

You will receive a BRP if you did not use the ‘UK Immigration: ID Check’ app to make your visa application, or if you are a national of one of the countries on the UKVI Visa National list, and are in the UK for more than 6 months.

Stamped vignette (travel visa)* – An image of your vignette that has been stamped at the UK border. If your vignette was not stamped because you used an e-gate at the UK border please upload your vignette and proof of the date you entered the UK. For example, a boarding pass or plane ticket. Your date of arrival in the UK needs to be within the valid period of your travel vignette.  

*Please note that if your current visa (BRP) states ‘Leave to Remain’ you will not have an associated vignette and do not need to upload a vignette for the ID check. 

 

5. Students with a Student Biometric Residence Permit (BRP): Other BRP Collection Location (e.g. Post Office) 

Check your BRP collection location – You can check your BRP collection location in the payment section of your online visa application. Or, if you applied for your visa outside of the UK, your BRP collection location may be on your UKVI decision letter.  

You will receive a BRP if you did not use the ‘UK Immigration: ID Check’ app to make your visa application, or if you are a national of one of the countries on the UKVI Visa National list, and are in the UK for more than 6 months.

Front and back of BRP – An image of the front and back of your BRP. You will need to collect your BRP before completing the online ID check form.  

 

6. Students studying for 6 months or less 

Passport – An image of your passport information page. 

Visitor or Student Visa – An image of your visa that has been stamped at the UK border. If your visa was not stamped because you used an e-gate at the UK border please upload your visa and proof of the date you entered the UK. For example, a boarding pass or plane ticket.  

Or: 

Entry Stamp – If you are not required to apply for a visa before entering the UK for 6 months or less upload an image of the stamp you received at the UK border. If you did not receive an entry stamp because you used an e-gate at the UK border please upload proof of the date you entered the UK. For example, a boarding pass or plane ticket.  

Or: 

Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) – Your ETA email and the stamp you received at the UK border.

 

7. Students with Other types of Immigration Permission 

For example, PBS Dependant, Short Term Study, Indefinite Leave to Remain, Refugee, Asylum seeker, Settlement, Hong Kong BNO, Skilled Worker (Previously Tier 2).  

Passport – An image of your passport information page. Or, if you do not have a passport, your travel document.  

Stamped vignette (travel visa)* – An image of your vignette that has been stamped at the UK border. If your vignette was not stamped because you used an e-gate at the UK border please upload your vignette and proof of the date you entered the UK. For example, a boarding pass or plane ticket.  

*Please note that if your current visa (BRP) states ‘Leave to Remain’ you will not have an associated vignette and do not need to upload a vignette for the ID check. 

Your current immigration permission – An image of your current immigration permission, for example a visa vignette or front and back of your BRP.  

Or: 

Share Code – Obtain your share code by visiting the GOV.UK view and prove your immigration status site. Please make sure you choose ‘something else’ as the option when asked for the purpose of the check, this will ensure the share code is for Right to Study, not for Right to Work or Right to rent.   

 

8. Students with an outstanding visa application 

Passport – An image of your passport information page 

Front and back of BRP – An image of the front and back of your BRP. If you did not have a BRP for your most recent visa, then please provide a copy of your visa or your eVisa Share Code.

Stamped vignette (travel visa)* – An image of your vignette that has been stamped at the UK border. If your vignette was not stamped because you used an e-gate at the UK border please upload your vignette and proof of the date you entered the UK. For example, a boarding pass or plane ticket.  

*Please note that if your current visa (BRP) states ‘Leave to Remain’ you will not have an associated vignette and do not need to upload a vignette for the ID check. 

Visa application form – Your visa application submitted with unique application reference number as the proof of visa application made while waiting for the UKVI decision or a copy of the UKVI successful decision email while waiting for new BRP to be delivered.
