Frequently asked questions about the Turing Scheme

Payments, Repayments, Placement Changes and Funding Regulations

When are payments made?

Please read the Documents Required for Payments for information on payment timelines.

Cost of Living Grants

Cost of Living Grants are usually paid in two instalments. The first payment will be paid once all necessary start-of-placement documentation has been completed, and this will be for approximately 70% of the grant for the total duration of your placement.  The second instalment, which will be for the remaining 30% of your grant, will be paid at the end of your placement once we have received your Certificate of Attendance and Turing Scheme Feedback form.

Travel Grant (only applicable to students who qualify for the Underrepresented Backgrounds Grant)

For students on placements longer than 56 days, the Travel Grant will usually be paid together with the first Cost of Living instalment, if evidence of travel costs has been uploaded. For students on placements shorter than 56 days, the Travel Grant will be paid before the placement start date where possible. Evidence of travel costs should be uploaded once travel tickets have been purchased.

Students must evidence they have fully spent their Travel Grant. If purchasing a one-way ticket to the host country, please remember to upload evidence of the return journey before the end of placement.

What do I do if there are changes to my placement?

Remote study or work

The Turing Scheme is unable to offer funding for remote placements. If your host institution has switched to remote learning/ working, please contact your Activity Lead and the Turing team as soon as possible so that we can advise you on the next steps.

Placement cancellation or unable to travel abroad

Please contact your Activity Lead and the Turing team as soon as possible so that we can advise you on the next steps.

Change in dates or host institution

Please contact your Activity Lead and the Turing team as soon as possible so that your details can be updated.

If your placement details changed before you received your first payment, the Turing team will send you a Grant Agreement Amendment that you will need to agree to before your payment can be processed.

Other FAQs

I started my placement before submitting my application form. Am I eligible for funding for the time I spent on placement before submitting my application?

If you started your placement before applications opened for 2024-25 Turing funding, you will be eligible to receive funding from your start-of-placement date, or from 1st September, if your placement started before this date. Any date prior to 1st September 2024 will not be funded by the Turing Scheme.

How do I answer the question about receipt of Turing Scheme funding on my Student Finance England (SFE) application?

As Turing Scheme funding cannot be guaranteed, please answer ‘no’ to this question. If you are a Study Abroad student, the answer to this question will not impact your SFE application. If you are a Work Placement Abroad student and your Turing application is successful, the Funding team at Leeds will inform SFE so that your maintenance loan can be amended.
