Ramadan at the University of Leeds

Each year, many members of our university community observe Ramadan and come together to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr.

If you’re observing Ramadan or celebrating Eid-ul-Fitr away from home for the first time it can feel quite different. There are a range of activities taking place across campus as well as support services available to help you during this period.

Free University of Leeds hot iftars and Eid Celebration

Every year, the University of Leeds hosts a Ramadan programme of events. The programme includes on campus free weekly hot iftars throughout Ramadan and an Eid Celebration.

These gatherings provide a welcoming space to come together, break the fast, take part in prayers, and listen to inspiring guest speakers.

With a relaxed, inclusive and child‑friendly atmosphere, our events offer the chance to connect with others, reflect together and celebrate the spirit of Ramadan and Eid through shared food, conversation and community.

Having an iftar organised by the University makes me feel recognised and seen. It gives a strong sense that our traditions and needs matter and that we are valued members of the community.

Extended opening hours of prayer spaces

We know that prayer, reflection and community are especially important during Ramadan. To support you during this time, we run extended the opening hours of our prayer spaces throughout the month; allowing more flexibility for daily prayers, Taraweeh and quiet moments of reflection.

Dedicated Muslim student support advice

The University’s Muslim Student Advisers provide confidential, faith‑informed support for students and staff throughout the year, including during Ramadan. Support can include:

  • a safe space to talk about faith, wellbeing, and identity
  • guidance on balancing fasting with studies, exams, and placements
  • support around prayer spaces, religious adjustments, and signposting to other services
  • help navigating university processes where faith may be a consideration.

You can email the Muslim Student Advisers at muslimstudentsupport@leeds.ac.uk.

Events and support from Leeds University Union Islamic Societies

Throughout Ramadan, the Leeds University Union Islamic Society (ISOC) and the Ahlul Bayt society (ABSOC) run a range of student-led events, including additional Iftars, talks and social activities.
