Leeds Assessment Centre
The Leeds Assessment Centre carries out needs assessments as part of a disabled student's application for disability support funding.
We provide needs assessments as part of the Disabled Students' Allowances (DSA) application process. DSA is funding for disability support provided to students in higher education including University and some college students, usually through the Student Loans Company.

Who can use the Leeds Assessment Centre?
We carry out assessments of study needs for disabled people who are eligible for Disabled Students' Allowances (DSA) and who:
- are prospective or current undergraduate or postgraduate students at the University of Leeds; or
- plan to study at another university but would like an assessment carried out locally.
Our purpose is to produce a clear and detailed analysis of how your disability impacts on your higher education so that you can better understand and take more control over your learning.
We aim to produce specific and appropriate disability support and adjustments recommendations to guide you, your institution and your support funding body.
We were the first assessment centre in West Yorkshire and have long-established relationships with higher education institutions nationally, across the region and with the University of Leeds. We maintain very high standards in all that we do and have been members of the following organisations since they began:
- National Network of Assessment Centres (NNAC)
- Disabled Students' Allowances Quality Assurance Group (DSA-QAG).
About the needs assessment
The assessment will involve a meeting with an experienced assessor who will discuss your disability and the way it may affect your studies. This usually takes about one and a half hours. The assessor will make recommendations on individual strategies, support, equipment and assistive technology, which should help you reach your full potential.
Your assessment is a supportive process and an opportunity for you to talk through any study-related concerns you may have, as well as work out how the University can ensure you have equal access to your course. Even though this is called an "assessment", it does not involve any kind of tests, and it is not an assessment of your academic achievements.
All our assessors are guided by a clear set of principles:
- The assessment should be a clear analysis of your disability as it relates to higher education, so that you are better able to take control of your own education and achieve greater independence, and the your institution is better able to respond to your needs
- Recommendations for both funded and unfunded disability support, adjustments and strategies for addressing barriers to learning should be demonstrably appropriate for meeting your needs, but avoid granting you an unfair advantage.
The assessor should always take into consideration:
- Accepted best practice with regard to minimising barriers to learning for disabled students.
- Your own thoughts, experiences and feelings with regard to disability and education.
- The conditions on the provision funding, and respect the use of public funds.
- The policies, practices and conditions at your institution.
About our assessors
We have a close-knit team of very experienced needs assessors. In addition to having a broad knowledge and understanding of disability support in higher education, each has a specialist, in-depth knowledge of one or more areas of support. This means that you'll receive an expert assessment that is tailored specifically to you and your needs.

I provide students and DSA Assessors with support and guidance, and I manage queries from stake holders, in relation to all aspects of the DSA application and report process. I am responsible for proof reading and distributing needs assessment reports. I also ensure accurate records are maintained in order to provide DSA-QAG with a monthly statistical Key Performance Indicator (KPI) report. My telephone number is 0113 34 37396.

I offer guidance to disabled students regarding Disabled Students Allowances (DSA) and the needs assessment process. I co-ordinate the needs assessment process specifically in relation to obtaining relevant DSA documents, finalisation of needs assessment reports, room bookings, diary management, record keeping, updating website, and liaising with staff and stakeholders. Booking a needs assessment appointment at Leeds Assessment Centre
Once you've received approval from your funding provider, you can book a needs assessment appointment at the Leeds Assessment Centre by contacting us via the details listed below. You'll need to provide us with:
- a copy of your approval letter from your disability support funding provider
- a copy of your evidence of disability (this should be the same evidence you used to apply for your funding)
- further information from your university if you're a non-University of Leeds student
- a completed pre-assessment questionnaire that will be sent out with your appointment confirmation.
The cost of the DSA assessment is taken from your DSA funding. We only charge a single assessment fee that covers all work required for the duration of your course of study.
- Any activities undertaken by the assessor or Centre with you to manage additional DSA support recommendations, for the duration of the original course.
- Liaison with funding bodies, equipment suppliers, HEIs or other stakeholders for the purpose of managing these additional recommendations.
Postgraduate and PGCE students may be eligible for a formal review of their needs, funded through the postgraduate DSA. All reviews must be authorised in writing by the funding body.
If you're an international student or non-degree course student then contact the Disability team as the process may be slightly different.
If you would not normally be travelling to the University of Leeds, you should be able to claim back the cost of travel for the needs assessment from your funding body. Claims forms are available from most funding body websites, but in other cases you may have to contact your funding body to get one. If you want to claim for travel expenses you must keep proof of how much you have spent, such as receipts.
What if I have to change or cancel my needs assessment appointment?
Please contact us as soon as you can to discuss this with us. If you cancel with less than two working days notice, or miss your appointment, we may have to charge you £50 to pay the Assessor for their time.
What happens after the assessment?
The Assessor will write a report, detailing how your disability affects your studies, what support you require, why you require it and how much it should cost. This should be ready for you to read within 10 working days. Once we have looked into any amendments you might have suggested, and you have signed this report off, we'll send copies to you, to your institution and to your funding body. The funding body will get back to you in writing with their decision. If there are any problems with this please contact us. In the event that you are not happy with an aspect of our service, we will aim to resolve the issue as soon as possible. If however, you are still not happy and want to complain, then please follow our complaint procedure

How to find us
The University is about 20 minutes walk from Leeds train station:
- Come out of the station into City Square; with the Queens Hotel behind you, walk straight up Park Row.
- Continue up Park Row until the first major junction.
- Cross straight over The Headrow and continue up Cookridge Street.
- At the next set of lights go straight on passing Millennium Square on your left and Leeds City Museum on your right.
- Turn left on to Woodhouse Lane, a busy main road. You'll pass Leeds Beckett University on your left and our University campus begins in another 50 metres or so, on your lef
- Once on campus, you can navigate to the Chemistry West Block building using our online campus map or by using the larger maps of campus which are located around the campus

There is also the Leeds City Bus which stops at the bus and train stations and at the southern end of campus (near the back of Leeds General Infirmary A&E) every 8 minutes from 6.30 am - 7.10 pm Mondays to Saturday, costing 50p per journey.

Parking on campus is limited, and we are also committed to reducing our carbon emissions, so we encourage staff and visitors to use other transport where possible. Parking must be pre-booked, and the charge is £7 per day.
