Subsidised short programmes

University of Leeds students have opportunities to attend subsidised short programmes in Europe, Asia and Latin America. The application deadline for summer 2017 has now passed.

 

The Study Abroad office "organisation" on the VLE is one of your most important resources when checking your eligibility to apply and researching your options. It's also where you go to complete your online application to study abroad over summer. Enrolling does not commit you to applying. How to enrol: 

  1. Scroll down the VLE home page until you see the search box entitled "Find Module/Org" at the bottom left of the screen.
  2. Using the drop-down menu, change "module" to "organisation" and use "study abroad" as your search criteria.
  3. To the right of "CJH00003" click on the arrow and select "enrol". 
  4. On the following screen, select "submit". The Study Abroad Office should now be listed under the organisations you are a member of.

Programmes in Europe

    AU Summer University, Aarhus University, Denmark

    Term 1:1 from 3 July to 21 July 2017 or Term 2: from 24 July to 11 August 2017. Start dates and duration vary by course.  
    The programme at AU Summer University consists of a broad variety of courses, taught in English within the fields of: Business Economics and Management, Communication, Culture and Society, Health, Law, Psychology, Science and Technology. For selected University of Leeds students the tuition fee will be waived. Aarhus University is among the top 100 universities in the world. The study environment at the university is concentrated around an attractive campus in the centre of the city of Aarhus. It is a lively, modern university and there is a wide range of on-campus facilities for students. Aarhus is the 2017 European Capital of Culture. For selected University of Leeds students the tuition fee will be waived.

    International Summer University Programme, Copenhagen Business School 

    23 June – 5 August 2017
    Join ISUP, one of the Europe’s largest and oldest summer programmes, and experience the amazing spirit of wonderful Copenhagen and exciting courses taught by brilliant faculty. Be inspired by the international environment and other participants from over 50 countries. Priority for places will be given to students from LUBS. For selected University of Leeds students the tuition fee will be waived.

    Italian Language Programme, University of Bergamo, Italy

    2 July – 29 July 2017
    CIS (the Centre of Italian for Foreigners) at the University of Bergamo has been organising Italian language and culture courses for foreigners since 1978. The University is situated in the ancient upper town in Bergamo which is rich in artistic and historical monuments. Bergamo is within easy reach of the Italian lakes such as Garda and also Milan. The programme includes 25 hours of tuition per week and cultural activities and excursions are also offered during the programme.  Successful applicants will receive a £500 Santander scholarship to help pay for a portion of the programme fee. Priority for places will be given to students who are not studying Italian language as part of a single or joint honours degree at Leeds and have been selected to spend a year studying abroad in an Italian speaking country in 2017/18.

    French Language and Culture, Université du Maine, France

    26 June – 21 July 2017 
    The Université du Maine is a multidisciplinary institution founded in 1977 and based in the city of Le Mans. There are places for Leeds students to study at the Université du Maine in summer 2017 on their four week summer programme which includes 99 hours of French language and culture tuition. Trips are also offered as part of the programme, such as visits to Le Mont Saint-Michel, Les Châteaux de la Loire and company visits. Successful applicants will receive a £500 Santander scholarship to help pay for a portion of the programme fee. Priority for places will be given to students who are not studying French language as part of a single or joint honours degree at Leeds and have been selected to spend a year studying abroad in a French speaking country in 2017/18.

      German language and culture, Berlin School of Economics and Law, Germany

      2 July - 22 July 2017 
      This summer the Berlin School of Economics and Law is offering places for Leeds students on a tuition-waiver basis to take part in their international summer school. Participants in the summer school will follow an intensive three-week programme of either beginners or advanced beginners German language. The summer school also includes cultural activities and a social programme.

      Priority for places will be given to students who are not studying German language as part of a single or joint honours degree at Leeds, are at beginners or advanced beginners level German and have been selected to spend a year studying abroad in a German speaking country in 2017/18.

      Bayreuth Summer University for Intercultural German Studies, Bayreuth University, Germany

      8 August – 1 September 2017 
      The intensive language courses for all levels take place in the morning from Monday to Friday. In the afternoon, the programme continues with communication courses or specialised courses. The communication courses, involving small groups, strengthen your German for everyday life. In the specialised courses, you will be able to become acquainted with a certain topic, intensifying your specialised knowledge. Participants with B2 level German or higher may choose between various specialised courses or the communication course. For selected University of Leeds students the tuition fee will be waived. Priority for places will be given to students who are not studying German language as part of a single or joint honours degree at Leeds, are at beginners or advanced beginners level German and have been selected to spend a year studying abroad in a German speaking country in 2017/18.

      Bayreuth International Summer School, Bayreuth University, Germany

      3 - 14 July 2017  
      Four intensive courses are offered as part of the summer school:

      • Economics & Business Management
      • Engineering & Material Sciences
      • African Studies
      • Chemistry and Biotechnology

      Cultural events and excursions are also offered, for example trips to Berlin and Bamberg. The courses are taught by international guest lecturers from seven different countries; an intercultural and international learning setting for all participants. Courses are taught in English and for selected Leeds students the tuition fee will be waived.

      Doing Business in Europe, European Business School, Oestrich-Winkel, Germany

      12 – 30 June 2017
      This innovative three week programme allows students to study economic and political issues in European business, European integration and monetary unification, corporate governance and leadership in European businesses, among other topics. This programme is ideally suited for students studying business subjects and LUBS students have priority. Students of economics, law, accounting or related fields may also apply. For selected University of Leeds students the tuition fee will be waived.

      The programme includes:

      • 60 lecture hours
      • Corporate visits
      • Case study discussions and lectures
      • Social activities and sightseeing
      • a 5 hour German language ‘survival course

      Spanish language and culture, Universidad Pontificia de Salamanca, Spain 

      2 - 29 July 2017 
      The Study Abroad Office is offering places for Leeds students to study Spanish in the beautiful city of Salamanca in July 2016. Successful applicants will receive a £500 Santander scholarship to help pay for a portion of the programme fee. Priority for places will be given to students who are not studying Spanish language as part of a single or joint honours degree at Leeds and have been selected to spend a year studying abroad in a Spanish speaking country in 2017/18.

      The programme provides:

      • four weeks of Spanish language tuition at the Universidad Pontificia de Salamanca
      • four weeks full-board accommodation in a university dormitory
      • guided tour of Salamanca
      • excursion to nearby attractions.

    Programmes in Latin America

      UDLAP Summer Exchange Programme, Puebla, Mexico

      28 June - 25 July 2017
      The Universidad de las Américas Puebla (UDLAP) is one of the most prestigious private universities in Mexico and a long-standing exchange partner of the University of Leeds. UDLAP is located in Cholula, Puebla, 100 kilometers southeast from Mexico City. In summer 2015 they are offering places for Leeds students to study for four weeks on their Summer Exchange Programme on a fees-free basis. The programme includes:

      • Four weeks of accommodation in dormitories
      • Breakfast and lunch (Monday - Friday)
      • Four weeks tuition; academic subjects and Spanish Language

      This programme is particularly suitable for intermediate or advanced Spanish learners. There is a very limited number of other English-taught courses available (mostly business subjects).

    Programmes in Asia

      Korea University international summer campus, Seoul, South Korea

      26 June - 3 August 2017 
      In summer 2017 the University of Leeds is offering students the opportunity to study at Korea University in Seoul, South Korea for six weeks. KU’s international summer campus offers students the chance to put together their own programme of modules at a top Korean University, with a huge range of subjects available, including Korean culture and the opportunity to study Korean language. For selected University of Leeds students the tuition fee will be waived.

      Hanyang International Summer School, Seoul, South Korea

      1 - 30 July 2017 
      Hanyang University (Seoul, South Korea) is offering places on its International Summer School to selected University of Leeds students. For selected University of Leeds students the tuition fee will be waived. HISS balances academic courses with cultural immersion and students can have a unique experience of Korean culture.  This is a great opportunity to experience South Korea, and there are a variety of courses taught in English on offer from a range of subjects as well as Korean language and culture.

      Yonsei International Summer School, Seoul, South Korea 

      26 June - 6 August 2017 
      Yonsei International Summer School (YISS) opened its doors in 1985 and since then, YISS has become an integral part of campus life based on a unique blend of Korean and global cultures. YISS offers a wide range of courses taught in English, including the arts, culture, humanities, Asian and Korean studies, international politics and economics, global management, science and technology and environmental studies. For selected students the tuition fee will be waived.

      CUHK International Summer School, Hong Kong

      25 June – 2 August 2017
      The CUHK International Summer School (ISS) provides students with an opportunity to combine high-quality learning with an unforgettable summer experience. While attending, students can learn and live alongside other students from a diverse range of backgrounds and cultures. International students can immerse themselves in a multicultural environment and gain insights into Asian cultures, experience a unique learning environment on the green, spacious campus of CUHK outside regular term time, and enjoy the many pleasures of summer in Hong Kong – Asia’s world city. Each summer the July Session of ISS offers some 20 courses, encompassing business, China studies, Chinese medicine, engineering, environmental studies, humanities and social science, in addition to language (Putonghua and Cantonese). These courses, except Chinese medicine and Chinese language, are taught by visiting professors. For selected students the tuition fee will be waived.

      CUHK Chinese Language Summer School, Hong Kong

      4 – 26 August 2017
      The CUHK International Summer School (ISS) provides students with an opportunity to combine high-quality learning with an unforgettable summer experience. While attending, students can learn and live alongside other students from a diverse range of backgrounds and cultures. International students can immerse themselves in a multicultural environment and gain insights into Asian cultures, experience a unique learning environment on the green, spacious campus of CUHK outside regular term time, and enjoy the many pleasures of summer in Hong Kong – Asia’s world city. The August Session of ISS provides students with an opportunity to learn Putonghua and acquire pragmatic competence through lessons and immersion activities. It embraces language learning, cultural immersion and entertainment, and offers a remarkable experience for non-native Chinese learners. For selected students the tuition fee will be waived.

      HKUST International Summer Exchange Programme, Hong Kong

      19 June - 12 August 2017 
      This summer Hong Kong University of Science and Technology is offering Leeds students the opportunity to take part in their International Summer Exchange Programme and study one of the top ranked universities in Asia. This programme is suitable for Business, Science and Engineering students. Please note this programme is not open to students currently in their first year at Leeds. Participants in the summer school build their own programme from the selection provided by HKUST and the following departments offer courses: the schools of Science, Engineering, Business and Management and Humanities and Social Science.  Selected Leeds students will register as exchange students at HKUST and no tuition fee will be charged.

      HKBU Summer Programme, Hong Kong Baptist University, Hong Kong

      29 June – 2 August 2017 
      At the HKBU Summer Programme there are more than 30 courses available in the areas of Business, Communication, Economics, English, Film, Finance, History, Journalism, Marketing, Religion, Science and Sociology.  Alongside the courses, students can enjoy business visits and cultural activities built into the programme. Also included is a cultural fiedl trip in Hong Kong and to Macau. For selected University of Leeds students the tuition fee will be waived.

      International Summer School, Hong Kong Polytechnic University

      9 June - 9 July 2017 or 14 July - 13 August 2017 
      The PolyU summer school offers a truly international study abroad experience where you will study with PolyU students as well as students from around the world. You will choose one or two courses from a range taught in English. Courses are offered in three subject areas: 'Chinese language, culture and society', 'design innovation and technology' and 'business, entrepreneurship and global leadership'.  There are optional field trips organised as part of the programme which will take place 9 - 14 July 2017 between the two sessions. Choose from a trip within Hong Kong or to Taiwan or Xian. For selected University of Leeds students the tuition and accommodation fee will be waived. In addition Hong Kong Polytechnic University will provide a scholarship worth $1,000 US for each selected Leeds student if they have an academic average of at least 60.

      East China University of Politics and Law, Shanghai, China

      17 June - 7 July 2017 
      The summer school combines both the study of Chinese law and excursions in Shanghai and to local areas. All teaching will be in English.  It will be a truly rewarding experience in one of Asia’s most exciting cities for any student who wants to know more Chinese law and culture. Students will be able to take intensive courses on the Chinese legal system, pay visits to local law institutions and experience Chinese culture in various ways. Priority for places will be given to students from the School of Law who have no, or limited experience of Chinese culture. Tuition costs will be waived for successful applicants nominated by the Leeds Study Abroad Office.

      Wuhan University International Summer Programme, China

      18 June - 15 July 2017 
      Wuhan University is one of the most prestigious universities in China, and this summer they are offering selected Leeds students to study on its summer programme for four weeks.  Tuition and housing costs will be waived for successful applicants nominated by the Leeds Study Abroad Office. In addition, if you are currently in receipt of Leeds Financial Support you are eligible to receive a Santander scholarship to cover the cost of the activities fee. The programme includes Chinese language classes and introductory lectures in Chinese culture. There are social and cultural activities organised during the programmes and one week of the programme will be spent in Enshi where participants will have the opportunity to experience classes at Hubei University for Nationalities such as Taichi, sports, dance and music. The programme includes an extended field trip to explore the Enshi area including a trip to the Enshi grand canyon.

      International Summer Session, Fudan University, China

      7 July – 4 August 2017 
      Fudan University was established in Shanghai in 1905 and is consistently  ranked in the top three universities in China. The International Summer Session provides a study and cultural experience to students from all over the world. There are 18 content courses, three Chinese language courses at different levels and two Physical Education courses on offer. In addition historical and cultural visits are offered. The content courses will cover a range of topics in History and Culture, Society and Politics, Business and Economy, and Science and Technology. For selected University of Leeds students the tuition fee will be waived.

      ZJU Entrepreneurship in China International Summer School, Zhejiang University, China

      21 June – 11 July 2017 
      Founded in 1897, Zhejiang University is one of China’s oldest and most prestigious institutions of higher education. It is also a member of the C9 League (Consortium of top 9 universities in China) and has been consistently ranked among the top three in the nation. The University is located in Hangzhou, a city with a rich culture and heritage along the southeast coast of China, which is about 50-minute travel away from Shanghai by high-speed train. Hangzhou is the capital and largest city of Zhejiang Province, which is well known in China for its vibrant private economy, entrepreneurship and innovation. At the International Summer School you can learn about doing business in China from a cultural and economic perspective, as well as Chinese entrepreneurship and some basic Chinese language. You will also have the opportunity to visit various companies, meet entrepreneurs and undertake a Business Project. For selected University of Leeds students the tuition fee will be waived.

      Antai Global Summer School, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China

      2 – 21 July 2017 
      Shanghai Jiao Tong University (China) is offering places on its Antai Global Summer School to selected students from the University of Leeds. Priority for places will be given to students from LUBS. For successful applicants, the tuition fee will be waived. The program provides enriched academic learning in a top Chinese university as well as valuable cultural experience in one of the most vibrant cities in China. The Summer School combines a variety of curricular and extra-curricular activities including: lectures, case study, corporate seminars, company visits, city sightseeing and cultural events.

      Summer Session in Asian Studies, Sophia University, Tokyo, Japan 

      20 July - 11 August 2017
      Since its foundation in 1961, Sophia University Summer Session in Asian Studies has provided the participants with the opportunity to study about Japan and explore the country's relation to Asia and the rest of the world. There are approximately 15 different module options (taught in English) on offer. Subjects include Japanese language, business, history, culture, theatre and more. For successful applicants, the tuition fee will be waived.

      Japanese Language Summer Course, Akita University, Japan

      12 June - 21 July 2017
      The summer programme is a six-week, intensive Japanese language course. Participants can take elementary courses taught by experienced Japanese instructors to hone their Japanese language skills in a small class environment. For selected University of Leeds students the tuition fee will be waived. Akita International University is located in a rural area, ideal for experiencing traditional Japanese culture and rich natural beauty.
