Where to shop for food and essentials in Leeds

You can find food from all over the world in Leeds. Read about where you can shop for food and essential items on campus, at home and across the city.

Supermarkets and essentials stores

On campus

  • The Leeds University Union building has a Co-op supermarket where you can buy food and essential items. It also has a range of shops and food outlets
  • Across the road from campus, on Woodhouse Lane, there are a number of other shops and cafés.
  • Tesco Express is next to Central Village accommodation, just on the edge of campus. This store sells food and is open until 11pm every day.

Leeds city centre

  • Morrisons is a large supermarket and is a short walk from the University on Woodhouse Lane. It sells a wide range of food and household items. 
  • Sainsbury's have supermarkets in the city centre (and in Headingley). There is a smaller store on Woodhouse Lane and a larger store on The Headrow. 
  • Kirkgate Market is located near Leeds bus station and is one of the largest undercover markets in Europe. It sells groceries and other items on market stalls. Many are very good value for money. 
  • Argos sells household and electrical items. The city centre store is on The Headrow.

Specialist international, Kosher and Halal food shops 

Leeds is a very multicultural city, with many shops selling international ingredients and kitchen appliances. Here are some international shops and supermarkets in Leeds:

Leeds city centre

  • Hang Sing Hong, 21 Blenheim Terrace, Woodhouse, LS2 9HJ and 117–119 Vicar Lane, LS1 6PJ – sells food from South East Asia
  • Kirkgate Market, Vicar Lane, LS2 7HY – sells a wide range of British and international foods including fish, meat, fruit and vegetables 
  • Sing-kee Supermarket, 26–28 Woodhouse Lane, LS2 8LX – sells food from East Asia

There are various Thai and Chinese supermarkets in the Chinatown area of Leeds city centre, from Vicar Lane to Templar Lane.

Outside the city centre

  • Abu Bakr International Supermarket, 37 Queen's Road, LS6 1NY– sells good quality fruit and vegetables and Halal food
  • Gourmet Foods, 584 Harrogate Road, LS17 8DP – Kosher butchers and bakery
  • Mahmood Halal Butchers, 23 Alexandra Road, LS6 1RF – Halal butchers
  • Medina Costcutter, 199–203 Chapeltown Road, LS7 3DX – Afro-Caribbean food 
  • Noshi Food Store, 41 Hyde Park Road, LS6 1PY (opposite Leeds Grand Mosque) – grocery and continental store with a Halal butchers next door 
  • Sing-kee Supermarket, 30–36 Cross Stamford Street, LS7 1BA – sells food from East Asia 

The Chapeltown Road area has many shops specialising in Afro-Caribbean food. The Harehills area, including Roundhay Road and Harehills Road, has many small shops that sell Halal food.

Home deliveries

Supermarket home deliveries

All major supermarkets allow you to order food, toiletries, cleaning products and basic medicines online through their websites or apps. Check for available apps on Apple App store or Google Play store.

To create an account and order online, you could be asked to provide a UK phone number in case of any problems with your delivery. If you’ve recently arrived in the UK, find out how to get a UK phone number.

Supermarkets will accept Mastercard or Visa but some supermarkets also offer the option to pay with Paypal. If you don’t have a UK bank account and would like to set one up, find out what you’ll need to do to open a bank account in the UK.

Some services allow you to get items delivered to you the next day. Amazon offers next day delivery, and Co-op offers same day delivery or collection.
