Tuition fee liability

When you register for your course, you’re liable to pay tuition fees. This also applies if you return from temporary leave or resit internally.

Find out more about the fees you are liable to pay if you’re leaving your course early.

How fees are calculated if you leave your course early

We calculate your fees based on your approved leaving date and not your last day of attendance (unless they’re the same).

How tuition fee liability applies to UK/Home undergraduates

You’ll be charged fees for every term you attend. Fees are in line with tuition fee loan dates set by Student Finance.

If you leave within term one, two or three, we’ll charge the following:

  • Term one: 25% fees
  • Term two: 50% fees
  • Term three: 100% fees

If you’re returning or resitting internally, these fees apply:

  • Term one, two and three (full year): 100% fees
  • Term two and three (January returner): 75% fees
  • Term one and two: 50% fees
  • Term one only: 25% fees
  • Term two only: 25% fees
  • Term three only: 50% fees

How tuition fee liability applies to international undergraduate students

If you leave before the end of teaching, fees will be calculated and charged monthly from your start date. Any part months will be charged as a full month.

Annual fees are based on nine months of study in one academic year.

If you’re returning or resitting internally, fees will be charged based on whichever is lowest:

  • The credits you will be registered for
  • The months you will be registered for

You cannot be charged less than the full value of your programme unless you have received a scholarship.

How tuition fee liability applies to UK and international postgraduate students

If you leave before the end of teaching, fees will be calculated and charged monthly from your start date. Any part months will be charged as a full month.

Annual fees are based on 12 months of study in one academic year.

If you’re a taught postgraduate student on a one-year programme and you take temporary leave, you’ll be charged at the same rate as new students in the year you return.

If you’re returning or resitting internally, fees will be charged based on whichever is lowest:

  • the credits you will be registered for or
  • the months you will be registered for.

You cannot be charged less than the full value of your programme unless you have received a scholarship.

Research student suspensions

We will not apply an additional charge for a suspension of study agreed by the Graduate Board’s Programmes of Study and Audit Group. However, you may pay a higher rate of tuition when you return from your suspension if the fees have increased.

Withdrawal or cancellation within 14 days

After you have received your offer and up to 14 days after the start of term (or the start date of your course) you have a limited “cooling off period” in which you may change your mind, withdraw from your place/registration and cancel your contract with the University. You must give written notice of your cancellation to the University within the 14 day “cooling off” period.
