Language learning resources

The Language Zone provides free resources and support to help you learn a language on your own.
Find us on the second floor of the Parkinson Building during our opening hours. If you have any questions, email us at languagezone@leeds.ac.uk.
Language Zone
The Language Zone is free for all students and staff of the University. We offer a wide range of resources, including books, films, graded readers, magazines and audio materials in more than 80 languages. We also have a computer cluster for personal study.
We have a number of ways to help you learn a language:
Learning materials
Search for our materials on the library's online catalogue and visit our Sharepoint pages for more information about the physical materials and online resources available to you.
Speaking activities
We run a range of English speaking practice activities throughout the week. You can find our current schedule on the Language Zone Sharepoint pages.
If you need one-to-one support for learning academic skills, you can book an appointment through Skills@Library.
Language Exchange
The Language Exchange is a way for language learners to make contact with fluent speakers, in order to improve their conversation skills and practise listening and speaking, as well as promoting intercultural understanding.
Language groups
Language groups are weekly conversation groups, led by student volunteers who are fluent speakers of the language. They lead friendly, relaxed sessions on topics such as student life and cross-cultural experience.
The groups are a great way to meet new people who share your passion for learning languages, and a chance to learn things about a language and culture you might not find in textbooks and formal language classes.
We currently running language groups for: English, French, German, Japanese and Spanish. You can join the groups as a participant, or if you are a speaker of one of these languages, you can volunteer to lead a group. The groups run twice a year: November to December and February to March.
