Language learning resources
Access free learning materials, events and advice to help you learn a language on your own at the Language Zone.
Find us on the second floor of the Parkinson Building during our opening hours. If you have any questions, email the Language Zone at languagezone@leeds.ac.uk.
Language Zone
The Language Zone is free for all of our students and staff and provides books, magazines, audio and video resources in more than 50 languages. We also have a computer cluster for personal study.
We have a number of ways to help you learn a language:
Learning materials
Check the learning resources we have on the library's online catalogue and visit the Language Zone Sharepoint pages for more information about our online activities and materials.
Workshops and activities
We run a range of workshops, language groups and advice drop-ins to help you study. You can find details of all our events, such as our Conversation Club, on the Language Zone Sharepoint pages.
If you need one-to-one support for learning academic skills, you can book an appointment through Skills@Library.
Language Exchange
Our Language Exchange allows you to practise speaking the language you are learning with a fluent speaker of that language. In return, you will let them practise speaking to you in the language you are fluent in.
Language groups
Language groups are weekly conversation groups, led by student volunteers who are fluent speakers of the language. They lead friendly relaxed sessions on topics such as student life and cross-cultural experience.
The groups are a great way to meet new people who share your passion for learning languages, and a chance to learn things about a language and culture you might not find in textbooks and formal language classes.
We currently running language groups for: English, French, German, Japanese and Spanish. You can join the groups as a participant, or if you are a speaker of one of these languages, you can volunteer to lead a group. The groups run twice a year: November to December and February to March.
Find out more about how to join or lead a language group and the deadlines for each.
