Support for students affected by current events in the Middle East

Date

We are aware that recent and ongoing conflict in the Middle East may be causing concern and distress within our community.

We know many will find the impact of such challenges incredibly difficult and may want to seek support or to know how they might be able to help those affected.

Our teams are monitoring developments in the Middle East closely. If you may be directly affected, colleagues will be in touch to check on your wellbeing and offer ongoing support and practical advice where needed. If you think you may be affected and have not yet heard from us, please contact the Student Information Service.

If you are planning to travel to, within or from the region, please check the latest travel advice from the UK Government and follow guidance from relevant local authorities.

Support for students

If you are feeling affected, you do not have to manage it on your own. The University offers a wide range of wellbeing and counselling support, providing a space to talk things through, make sense of what you are experiencing and explore ways to cope. Find the full range of University support and guidance services on our student support pages

Support is available through online appointments and drop-in sessions, alongside self-help resources, and, where appropriate, access to more specialised services outside the University.

It can be difficult to focus on your studies during stressful times and if you’re finding this difficult, speak to your school or course rep, your academic personal tutor or school support team if you can. Leading UK mental health charity Mind has got some practical resources on their website to help navigate the news, social media and your emotions if you’re feeling anxious or overwhelmed.

You can also access support through Leeds University Union (LUU). LUU Advice is a free, confidential and independent service that can help with wellbeing, academic concerns, money and housing. Visit the Help Desk in the LUU foyer (Monday to Friday, 9.30am to 4.30pm, opens at 10am on Wednesdays) or email LUU Advice at advice@luu.ac.uk.

LUU is also currently providing quiet reflection spaces and staffed drop-ins for students who would welcome time and space to reflect, ask questions or seek support.
