Progressing from an International Foundation Year to an undergraduate degree at Leeds.

Getting a head start on university life

My International Foundation Year prepared me in many ways. It helped me understand how the university system works, how to study effectively, and how to make the most of the resources available.

I had plenty of time to get familiar with the campus and city, find my favourite places, learn where to do my grocery shopping, and discover my favourite coffee spots. It also gave me the opportunity to build friendships, make connections, and learn more about British culture.

Another benefit was becoming familiar with the University systems, including exams, teaching styles, and what is expected from students. All of this made me feel much more confident when I started my undergraduate degree.

Getting support when it matters

My biggest piece of advice would be to make use of your lecturers and tutors. Attend office hours, ask questions, and seek advice about studying, books, resources, and projects.

Listening to how lecturers think about problems can be incredibly valuable and can help you develop your own way of approaching your studies.

I also found the Student Information Service very helpful. I had several questions about visas, share codes, and other administrative matters, and they were always available to provide support and guidance when I needed it.

Adjusting to a faster pace of learning

Overall, I found the transition quite smooth. However, one of the biggest challenges was the pace of learning.

The workload increased significantly, and there was much more content to cover in a shorter amount of time. I also found that assignments were quite different from those in the foundation year and required a different approach.

At first, this was a little overwhelming, but I adapted by asking questions, using office hours, and gradually learning how to manage my workload more effectively.

Staying organised and making the most of first year

When transitioning from a foundation year to your first year, I would recommend staying organised from the beginning and trying not to leave everything until exam season. Make use of office hours, ask questions whenever you're unsure about something, and take advantage of the support available.

I would also recommend studying consistently throughout the year. That doesn't mean studying 24/7 – it's important to enjoy your first year as well – but staying on top of the content makes a huge difference.

It's also worth connecting with students in the years above you. They can share useful advice about modules, assessments, revision techniques, and resources that helped them succeed.

Most importantly, enjoy your first year, get involved in university life, and make the most of the opportunities available to you while keeping your academic goals in mind.
