External/Carried Module Resits

If you have any remaining resit opportunities for failed modules, you may be able to retake them as carried modules in the following session, either as an external candidate or alongside your other modules if you have progressed to the next year of study.

Information about your student status and access to facilities as an external student can be found and downloaded in the External Student Guidance PDF. You should first check your eligibility, and you'll also need to find out about how and when to apply and when it is likely to take place.

External Candidates are only expected to attend University to resit on-campus examinations and assessments.

Unless granted first attempt resits (through mitigation), resit marks are capped at the pass mark (a mark of 40 for Undergraduates and a mark of 50 for Postgraduates).

Eligibility

Any resit has to be taken at the next opportunity, and failure to do so will result in the loss of an attempt. Marks for modules which are not taken will be classified as Absent.

If you are a finalist who needs to take carried module resits in the following year, you will resit as an external candidate.

If you are not a finalist, you will either progress to the next year of study whilst taking carried modules, or you will be required to be external for the year, and will therefore defer entry to the next year of study.  Whether or not you can progress will depend on if any of the modules you are resitting are Pass For Progression (PFP) modules and therefore you need to pass them before you can progress.  If you are resitting a lot of modules, you may also be required to be external, as the resit workload would be too high when combined with a full-year of study.

For guidance on whether you are eligible to resit please contact your parent school.  If unsure who to contact see the School Contacts webpage.

Undergraduates

If you started your programme of study before the academic year 2016/2017 you are permitted three attempts to pass a module; the original (first) attempt plus up to two resits.  If you started your programme of study during or after the academic year 2016/2017 you are permitted two attempts to pass a module; the original (first) attempt and one resit.

An exception to this rule is International Foundation year students who studied their foundation year in academic year 2015/2016. These students will continue under the old regulations and will be permitted three attempts to pass a module; the first attempt plus up to two resits.

Undergraduate students who have resit opportunities remaining after the August resit period may retake failed modules in the following academic year.

Postgraduates

Postgraduate students are permitted two attempts to pass a module; the original (first) attempt and one resit.

Students who have resit opportunities remaining may be permitted one final attempt as an external candidate in the following academic year.

First attempt resits

A first attempt resit is a further opportunity to achieve a true mark (not capped at a pass mark as a resit is).  If you accept the opportunity to re-sit as a first attempt, your original mark will be expunged and your result for the re-sit will apply, even if it is lower than your original mark.

First attempt resits are usually granted due to mitigating circumstances.  For help and support with the mitigating circumstances process please contact your school.  More information on mitigating circumstances as well as contact details for schools can be found on the Mitigating Circumstances Guidance webpage.

Fees prior to 2023/2024

Students are required to pay any resit fees charged prior to the 2023/2024 session.  So any fees for resits that took place in 2023 are valid, as these resits will have taken place in the 2022/2023 session.

If you have an outstanding resit fees to pay you should do so as soon as possible.  Please see the How to Pay webpage. If you have any queries about payment methods or late fees see the Finance Contact Details webpage for who to contact.

Resit assessment dates

You must take assessments when the module is next offered:

  • Semester 1 module resits take place in January
  • Semester 2 module resits take place in May/June.

Unfortunately, it isn't possible to find out the exact date of an assessment before you apply. This is because we write the timetable once we know which modules students have applied for. You should check the assessment timetable publication dates webpage to find out when the assessment timetables will be published.

As long as you apply by the deadline, you will be able to view your individual timetable (available through Minerva) once it has been published.  You can also view the timetable online through the Timetable by Module webpage.

When you view your timetable check that you have been entered for the appropriate assessments, and tell the Assessment & Progress Team immediately about any discrepancies.  Contact the team using the email address Examinations@leeds.ac.uk remembering to include your full name and student ID number in your email.

Assessed-work deadlines

Contact your school directly to find out the deadlines for submitting assessed work.
