Industrial action email to all students and postgraduate researchers - 10 February 2020

The below email was sent on 10 February 2020

Dear all,

The University and College Union (UCU) – which represents academic, professional and managerial staff – has announced that it intends to proceed with a further period of strike action related to ongoing disputes about pay and pensions.

The UCU has announced industrial action at 74 universities over pay and pensions. The following applies at Leeds:

The strikes are planned for 14 days, spread over four weeks as follows:

  • Week 1: Thursday 20 and Friday 21 February
  • Week 2: Monday 24, Tuesday 25 and Wednesday 26 February
  • Week 3: Monday 2, Tuesday 3, Wednesday 4 and Thursday 5 March
  • Week 4: Monday 9, Tuesday 10, Wednesday 11, Thursday 12 and Friday 13 March

The planned strike action will take place alongside ongoing action short of a strike (ASOS). This will mean that staff who are taking part in industrial action are:

  • working to contract
  • not covering for absent colleagues
  • not rescheduling lectures or classes cancelled due to strike action
  • not sharing materials relating to lectures or classes cancelled as result of strike action
  • not undertaking voluntary activities

Our priority throughout this time is to minimise any disruption to students. We will do all that we can to recover missed learning opportunities and will update our industrial action questions and answers page about how you might be affected.

How to keep up to date

When there is significant news to update you on, we will include this in our fortnightly Life at Leeds newsletter. Our industrial action page on the For Students website will also be kept up-to-date with the latest information as soon as it becomes available.

During any future period of industrial action you should keep checking your email, Minerva announcements and school Facebook groups in case of any updates, and if your timetable is disrupted and you need advice about what to do, the taught student office in your school should be able to help you.

Kind regards,

Student Communications
