Student card

Find out what a University of Leeds student card can do for you and how to collect one.

Your student card remains the property of the University. Please look after it and keep it safe until you leave the University.

What does a student card do?

Your student card:
  • identifies you as a student of the University of Leeds
  • works as your University Library Card - you need it to enter Library buildings and borrow books
  • provides you with access to computing facilities
  • allows you to use Sport and Physical Activity facilities (if you're a member)
  • is used as official ID for University examinations

Student card photos

You will be required to upload a passport style photo for your student card, ready for when you go to collect the student card at your appointment. If the photo you upload does not meet University requirements, the University staff will take your photograph during your appointment.

New students

Collecting your new student card will happen on campus. After you have submitted your online identity check, and the staff at the University have completed their checks, you will be sent an email with instructions of how to collect your student card. The student card is not a requirement for completing registration, but you have the option of booking an appointment to collect one.

If you are an international student and need to collect your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) from the University, your appointment will cover both student card and BRP collection.

If you are unable to come to campus

You can apply for your student card online if your programme is a distance-learning programme (online only), or if you are a part time learner. Your card will be posted to the address you provide on the form.

Replacement cards

Please place your order via the Student Card Order Form. The Form contains options for different types of student – returning students, distance learning students, part time students, etc.

You will have the option to collect your card, or to have it posted to the address you provide on the form. Note, the card functions as a way of accessing campus facilities (the Library, the Edge, etc) and student-discounted travel in the UK. We are not able to post to international addresses.

Please read the form carefully before placing your order. After you have placed your order you will receive a confirmation email from no_reply_ssc@leeds.ac.uk.

Expired cards

If the date on your student card is in the past, you can still use it, as long as you are still a registered student. Your student card will last for the duration of your current course at the University, regardless of the expiry date on the card (if a date is printed on it). If you're a current student whose course has been extended (e.g. students who have intercalated, taken a year abroad or in industry) and your student card has expired, your card will still work.

When you submit an order for your replacement student card, you will have to provide a photo of your current card to evidence that it is still in your possession and you have not lost/destroyed your card.

If you are starting a new course then you are classed as a new student and will need to follow the guidance above for new students to collect a new card.

Fraudulent use

If a student card is used fraudulently, you'll be subject to action under the University Disciplinary Procedure. This might not only involve you, but also anyone you've lent it to if this can be proved.
