Peer Mentoring

The School of Chemical and Process Engineering Peer Mentoring scheme involves two current undergraduate students mentoring a small group of first year students. An introductory social event for mentors and mentees is held during induction, after which groups can continue to meet as much as they like throughout the year.  We hope that this will provide an opportunity for new and current students to build friendships within the School, across year groups and programme areas.  If you are interested in being mentored please complete the attached application form and send it to scapestudentadvice@leeds.ac.uk by 19 September.

Course Reps

The School runs a Student Staff Forum which meets five times a year to receive feedback and to consider student concerns. These can be course-related or general. This is chaired by the student chosen by the Leeds University Union to be School Rep and attended by staff from the School Taught Student Education Committee (STSEC) and Course Reps. Course Reps from each programme and year are elected/re-elected at the beginning of the session. If you are interested in becoming a Course Rep, please see the Student Education Service website for further information and send your application form to scapestudentadvice@leeds.ac.uk by 30th September.

More information for undergraduate students studying in the School of Civil Engineering

Survey Camp

As part of your level 1 module Engineering Surveying and Construction Technology you will take part in a one week residential field trip to the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) National Construction College in Bircham Newton in Norfolk. The site provides an excellent Civil Engineering and Construction environment. While you are there you will be given a one day health and safety course and will be expected to complete a number of group activities including a control survey and a setting out exercise. The exercises will allow you to get practical experience of using surveying equipment.

Safety kit

On arrival in the school of Civil Engineering each undergraduate student is provided with a safety kit comprising of safety boots, high visibility jacket, hard hat, gloves and safety glasses all contained in a high visibility backpack. This will be used when taking part in selected laboratory practical sessions, during survey camp and any site visits you may undertake.

Industrial Mentors Scheme

As an undergraduate student in the School of Civil Engineering you will be able to take advantage of our industrial mentor’s scheme. This is a collaboration between the School of Civil Engineering, The University of Leeds and the Institution of Civil Engineers (Yorkshire and Humber). The purpose of the scheme is to provide first year students with a direct link into the civil engineering industry. By doing this it is hoped that you will:

  • Develop a better understanding of the civil engineering industry
  • Get an insight into what civil engineering employers want and what is required of a professional engineer
  • Develop a better understanding of the process of professional development, the route to chartership and the role of the ICE and IStructE
  • Be better able to relate your academic studies to real life civil engineering projects and challenges
  • Get first-hand experience of the civil engineering industry through site visits

Each level 1 tutor group will each be allocated an Industrial Mentor who will be a practicing civil engineer working in the Leeds area and selected with the help of the Yorkshire Branch of the Institution of Civil Engineers. It is anticipated that you and your Industrial Mentor will meet several times during your first year. Through interaction with your Industrial Tutor and participation in site visits you will be able to gain an insight into the civil engineering industry and the requirements of a professional engineer. It is hoped that the relationship formed with your Industrial mentor during your first academic year will be maintained throughout your time in the School.
