Information for parents, guardians and family members

Student Counselling and Wellbeing recognises the importance of families and guardians in supporting students through testing and challenging times.

There may be occasions when you are concerned about a student or wish to find out what support is available. Our staff can advise you on relevant support services within the University and externally.

For non-emergency enquiries, please email us or call +44 (0)113 343 0526 during our service hours (Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm).

Confidentiality

Confidentiality is critical to the success of our service. Once a student becomes a client of the service, we are bound by professional codes and legal guidance on information sharing and disclosure.

These codes and University protocol prevent us from providing any information about a student’s participation in counselling and wellbeing support without their express permission. We therefore cannot disclose whether a student has attended appointments, or whether we have seen or heard from them, even if they have told you themselves that they are accessing the service.

Any information shared with us by a parent/guardian or family member will be discussed with the student if they are a client of the service.

Emergency concerns

Student Counselling and Wellbeing is not an emergency service. If you are seriously concerned about a risk of suicide or severe mental health problems, please contact the student's GP or the police.
